A few gallons of leaded gas keeps the fuel pump gremlins at bay?

Interesting. You and I are in nearly the same situation, mileage-wise. I am also a 4/2007 build, with about 9100 miles. I ran 91 octane for about the first 3 months before I installed my tune, and from that point on, I have been mixing at least 4-5 gallons of 100oct with 91oct per tankful. The 91oct pump gas here has a high percentage of ethanol for "oxygenating" the gas for smog control purposes. Like many here, I rarely hit the START button without thinking about how long the engine takes to fire. I've had no issues yet but as everyone knows, there's no way to predict the HPFP failures. People have gone 30K miles and had their first pump fail, and some people are on their 2nd or 3rd (or more) pump and have less than 10K miles.
It's pathetic and there based on recent posts, either the stock of shitty pumps has yet to be purged from BMW parts warehouses, or they still don't have a reliable pump design. This is hard for me to believe considering how many models are getting the twin-turbo DI engine. As far as the OP goes, I doubt it's the lead that could be preventing an HPFP failure. It's more likely the lower level of ethanol in the fuel. Quote:

Leaded gas MIGHT help the HPFP if you had a small amount in the tank all the time (otherwise it'd just get washed off right away). While this point is debateable, what isn't is that the leaded gas will ruin your cats and maybe your sensors, which are a lot more expensive than the HPFP and will DEFINITELY have a dramatically reduced life. If you're concerned with HPFP life, you may want to add a few ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil to each tank of fuel. I have 28k on my 2007 fuel pump and the only reason I don't do that is because I'M HOPING the pump will fail while still under warranty.

4 Fuel Pumps in a month!? Short of being 90 percent, I have my doubt that anything related to alcohol in fuel would cause failures that frequent.

I have a friend who has 110k in his 335i and is on the original fuel pump.
He scratches his privates first thing in the morning and has done so since owning the car. That is the reason why his HPFP is doing so well. |

Ah, thanks for sharing. Maybe I can get the wife to help me on that.
