1298.97 after mail in rebate.

Seems like a decent purchase. Here are your intial problems:

17.3inch LCD: Lots of power being used.

Core™2 Quad Processor Q9000
Processor Speed 2.00 GHz
Processor Cache 6 MB L2 Cache: Unless your doing some serious computing you won't need quad core and will further suck your battery dry.
Processing speed is piss slow for a quad-core, your laptop will also get extremely hot!!

As stated before your DDR2 ram included will likely be ram that is running @ 667, no name value brand that is running timing of 5-5-5-15 (which is ok), likely get hot very quickly with absolutely no heat-spreader or cooling aspects at all.

Video Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4650 with up to 2815MB total available graphics memory with 1024MB dedicated:
This means that once you've exceeded the maximum amount of ram. The extra 2gb stick you throw in there will go into video memory and help with the video card. But, be warned this GPU will also suck you battery.

My thoughts would be make sure you get the 64-bit version of vista or XP. Make sure it's always plugged in, and invest in a 12 cell battery. Have fun with your new laptop!

Since it comes with DDR2, would buying DDR3 RAM work?

I didn't know laptop RAM had heat-spreaders on them.

It comes with the 64bit version of Vista

This is my desktop replacement on the go.

I've seen laptops go for way more than this with less specs to it. That is why I purchased this.

I found 4GB RAM with heat sinks for 100 bucks.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820104103

8GB is just ridiculous right now. 700 bucks.

Might be a good idea to. Find out if your board can support DDR3 first then if it can, and you can afford it then go for it. Be warned though DDR3 is still new technology and even newer for laptops. This would be a very expensive upgrade. My quad core home system is still running on DDR2

you catch my drift?

seems to me that you have never even used a mac, because if you did, you would not be saying this non-sense. This is the same as ricer guys talk shit about bimmers, without having driven one.

Although your number is within ten percentage points of the actual numbers [source], your reasoning is flawed. The differences in OS market share between Apple and Microsoft are a function of time, business penetration (i.e. familiarity), preference, cost, business practices, application availability, and so forth. To suggest that Microsoft's market dominance is due solely to price is mistaken.

That said, while I believe OS X to be a superior OS for my purposes (I'm a sysadmin and a programmer. OS X is a more flexible/powerful OS from both perspectives IMO), as a pragmatist, I believe in choosing the right tool for the job.

OP, you're purchase is just fine. If it is reliable and does everything you want it to, and you're happy with the price you got, then what does it matter what others think?

Lenovo Thinkpads are the best laptop computers. HP's are quite decent but not the best in terms of design and reliability.

Lenovo Thinkpads are used and certified by NASA in the shuttle and space stations and the only laptops certified for use for the Army in battle in terms of durability and reliability. Oh, let's not forget that Lenovo Thinkpads have the best keyboards of all laptops.

Except that Thinkpad keyboards are fucking retarded because the FN key is where the left CTRL key should be.

I use a Lenovo at work and that shit sucks. The Thinkpad is made so poorly. The plastic keeps moving.

You should try out the Thinkpad X series like X200 or X300. Really solid notebooks. NASA uses it on the shuttle.
