DIY - repairing curb rash on a 162 rim

That's awesome. I really did a number on my rims the other day and will be doing this shortly.

FYI - when parking, a good idea is to always straighten your wheel. That way, when reversing out of a spot, you don't accidentally grind your turned wheel against a side curb. This keeps you from yelling "F*CKING*G*DD*MNSH*T*A**H*LE*MOTHERF*CKR HOW THE HELL CAN I BE SO STUPID JUST SHOOT ME NOW!!!!" at the top of your lungs while pounding the wheel with your forehead and repeatedly punching yourself in the leg.

So, thanks for the write up. Now if I could only find an anger mgmnt DIY post... hehe

I think this is one of the best DIY, because almost everyone will have some sort of damage to their rims. Where do you get the Al putty?

I've had to do this twice. One scuff was my wife but I did the other backing into a primo parking spot.

I used red bondo putty. It dries super quick and is cheap. I used Wurth paint and clearcoat.

Just finished doing my 162 last week. Followed Paul's diy above and couldn't be happier.Thanks. My first diy and turned out just like brand new.

Analog, use 1Z silber or Wurth German Alloy Silver as suggested. The 1Z silber is a closer match. Both are not available in Geneva shops so I settled with BMW silver wheel paint. Should be available in your dealer. gluck.

Glad to be of help. TBH, I was amazed how easy it was - I'm not what you'd call a DIY nut, but I thought I might as well have a go before shelling out a fortune to let the 'experts' do it for me. I found all the putty & paints at my local car accessories store.

Thanks for the step by step, I did in two of my wheels and waiting for the weather to clear up to fix them.

I think others asked where did you get the paint color, I am not familar with the brand you used and silver is one of those tricky colors to match correctly. I think adding the brand and part number of the paint will help everyone.

A little added advice, generally speaking aluminum usually required a special primer, you can not use primer made for steel. Aluminum primers are also hard to find. This may not be much of an issue if you do not sand off too much factory primer and paint. The less you remove the better off.

I'm in France, so adding local product references would not be especially useful to most members. All BMW, VAG & Mercedes OEM wheels are made by the same manufacturer and therefore use the same paint. This is sold as 'German alloy wheel paint' here, but I don't know if it's available in other countries, sorry.

Try this which can be found locally in many places --

Duplicolor Wheel Paint (silver)

I got it at Pepboys and it looks like a very close match. I was waiting on Wurth paint but was told it still wasn't going to be available until July so I decide to try this and if it was horrible I would redo later. Fortunately, it was near perfect IMO. I think Griot's garage wheel paint is very close too.

Did mine last week. I would suggest that final 4th coat of paint then wait a while and do several light coats of clear. While most would view my final product as near perfect, I can see a slight line at the edge of primer (which I hard masked). It looked fine after painting (even in bright sunlight) but I now notice the line. Either I didn't sand well enough after primer or I did clearcoat too quickly and lifted the paint a bit. Like I said, I am probably the only one that would notice though!
