If you call any BMW parts dept, tell them you want the actuator for that particular turbo, they should give you a number and a price.

BUT - are you 100% sure that is what the problem is? If no one has confirmed, then you might be wrong.

Just phoned them and gave them the part no and asked if they could sell the actuator separately and they said they sell it as part of the turbo charger only.

Last mechanic i spoke to who did some other jobs on the car told me that the actuator was broken so im guessing that must be why im not getting any turbo at the moment.

The turbo that i will be likely to buy is this one

However just noticed that the part number is different from the one shown on realoem.com. Ebay listing shows part number of 7795498 while realoem.com shows 7795499. Its one digit different but what does that mean in terms of it being suitable for my car?

I'm no expert, but if it isn't the right number i wouldn't buy it. (especially off some fleebay geezer)

You need to go to a dealer / decent indy and get the car checked and a proper quote. Then decide what to do.

Buying cheap parts is often a false economy.

How much is your car worth? How much can you afford to lose if the engine gets wrecked and writes it off?

Like others have said i wouldn't take chances with the turbo and i wouldn't buy something that important from fleebay.

If it fails and bits go into the engine then its game over i'm afraid. Go to a main dealer or good indy like doughboy suggested and get a quote then decide they will give you a warranty with there work and that's worth in IMO.

The guy on ebay says he specialises in bmw turbos and is also offering guarantee of 3 months. Might take the risk with that as bmw charge £1000+vat for the turbo alone and independants want to supply the turbo at a cost of £700 and then charge another few hundred for labour otherwise they dont guarantee it. Its quite a lot of money. Not sure what to do. This cars proving to be a lot of headache for me.

His 3 month guarantee - does it cover consequential damage (ie wrecked engine) or just the £250 for the turbo?

I know its more money, but I'd go the indy route, even if its a grand all in.

It's even more money if the dodgy replacement turbo lunches itself and spits the impeller blades into the engine... then £1000 won't seem like a lot of money compared to a new block and the labour involved

These cars aren't really designed so that corners can be cut by dodgy turbo repairs and the like.... you're playing dangerously if you continue down the fleabay route (and as has just been said, have you even seen/read that seller's feedback ?! )

What if I got it repaired and then took out a warranty with warrantydirect?

Warranty direct etc won't pay out unless you can prove you've maintained the vehicle and any failed parts properly.

If the turbo fails and they see its a dodgy second hand one then they won't pay up.

Well i got my turbo fixed. Got it done by an independant for 250 for the turbo and 150 to fit.

Turbo works well now. Tested it out on the way home and got pulled by the police. They let off luckily.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Much appreciated.

P.S. Can someone direct me to some guide on how to change the air filter on my e90 320d 2005? The only threads i can find are for what looks like to be some sort of engine filter. Not sure if thats the one. the reason i need it is because on the service part on the onboard computer, theres a symbol with a fan and a box shaped thing which says 3000 miles left.
