How the hell do you get rid of ants for good?

i had a ant hill in my backyard. All i did was pour about a litre of boiling water down the hole and never saw another ant at my house again.

my uncle does the same thing in houston..except he pours about a gallon of boiling water right on the nest...and he does it several times to kill all the ants.
