I agree, this install is much LESS stealth than my current V1 hardwire setup, which tucks in neatly against the headliner and is not visible from behind or by someone standing outside the car.
But, like I said above, this is a quality write up with goods pics and should provide us with an alternative...and there's nothing wrong with that. ![]() With regards to mounting, see Mike Valentine's recommended install instructions (page 18) p.s. - get some new socks man!

I have mine high on the windshield to span higher on the horizon. I chose the same detector because after I did my homework I found reviews that had it better rated than the V1.
Thanks for the DIY

REAR RADAR
Calvino,
Thanks for the post but you are an idiot for not listening! The V1 reads radar from the rear as well and mounted low you will get no readings. My V1 has been mounted just under the factory tint on the windshield for 3 years on my 550 and has saved me many times. Dont be so defensive about your post just listen to what works. I think you need a V1 and then you will get it. Cheers ![]() |

Hey Hunter, it doesn't scream. It just talks. Mine is set so that after a few warnings are given (on low volume) it goes mute while still displaying the warning.
[edit] I just thought about something Hunter, how about we switch radar detectors for about a week or two and then we can both post our reviews here on the board for all to know our views on our experiences with both radar detectors. What do you think?

Well, I did my Beltronics RX65 Hardwire and here are the pictures of the finished product. The install is really no big deal. The wire going to the radar is tucked above the headliner along the windshield, down the drivers front pilar and into the drivers ac vent. Then the red cable goes down and ultimately makes it to the lighter's red wire in the center console. I didn't want to take the center console apart and instead I just drove the wire all the way to the back of it and attached it to the lighter in the center console.
The good thing about this is that the radar is masked by my EZ Tag ( Tollway Tag for those in other lattitudes). See for yourself. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I'd just like to throw in there, even though I have an E46 not an E90/E92, that my V1 has saved me many times, and always informs me of when I've been hit with laser. If I had to guess how many times I've been hit by laser (after I've had my V1 (mounted high)) by a cop, I'd say I've been hit 35x in a year. I just recently got a ticket from a cop hiding off the road who hit me in the front with laser, and sure enough my V1 caught it... but since laser is instant and precise- by the time I got the warning and slowed down to the posted speed limit, he already had my speed- and was proceding to tear ass after me. So the V1 mounted high always informs me of laser aimed at myself.

But detectors with the front and back detect are supposed to be mounted higher right cause it is better to have it above the rear seats for rea detections right?

i think its looks pretty tucked in when mounted right above the rear view mirror. I have an excort 8500, dont know how im going to pull off the install since the mute button is builtonto the 12v connector.
But the passpor 8500 is as good as the V1 - having owned both.Just a personal preference for those wanting an arrow to guide them in their search of 5-0. I prefer fine tuning my eyes so i can better my scanning when driving without a gaydar |

Well, the cable is not that strong anyways. I think as soon as that airbag comes out, the wire is going to come out from under the headliner, pulling with it the radar detector off its base.
We won't see that happen until the airbag actually deploys. Can you post your pictures?

how is mine different from yours? what is the circular metal thing and velcro pad for? and i only need only one quick connect?
i bought this direct wire straight from escortradar.com yours go on when the car turns on and off when the car turns off right? edit: nvm, i cut out the ring part and connected it to the brown cable with stone age style (stripped it and shuffed it to the white connector on the car and plugged it back in. works fine so far) btw, great write up ![]()
