Slowing down will become an option when your license gets suspended.
If you have not figured out how to avoid tickets, after getting three of them in a month, maybe you aren't as aware as you think you are. Find a place to speed where there is practically no chance of a copper hiding...and no chance of you, with your 18 year old driving skills, crashing into other drivers. |

With that mind set you shouldn't be allowed to drive. You're going to kill someone's child or yourself. But that's ok right? You know since you'll wait to grow up when your ready.

Wow. Was everybody a perfect driver at 16, 17, 18 years of age?
Give this guy some useful advise. Not the "cop talk" crap. People buy fast cars because they want to drive them fast. Bad drivers with fast cars kill themselves and other people. That's a fact. How do you solve that issue? Not by saying "grow up" or "drive slower". Parenting is a big factor, but if you parents were not good drivers, then you already have a bad start. Provide people the tools and means to drive faster safely, e.g., better cars, driving clinics, race tracks, amateur races. Drive across the point that not all conditions are beneficial for fast driving, e.g., don't drive drunk, slow down in residential areas, commuting traffic is not the place for speeding, etc. Learn to control road rage, if you are one of those. The best advise I can give is what uncle Ben told Peter Parker: "with great power, comes greet responsibility". Treat your car like a weapon. With proper training and usage you will be able to enjoy many years of fun and excitement, but beware that is dangerous and that you can cause irreparable damage is not handled properly. Use the V1 wisely! 'nuff said! |

Detectors
1. Valentine 1
2. iPhone, with Trapster. Pretty useless in the city, but on the open, unfamiliar road, it'll notify you of common resting places. |

Didn't realize op was 18. In that case, I would tell him to slow down. You're just going to get in trouble or end up hurting other people.

With a radar detector, from age 16 to 30, I had had 23 speeding tickets.
Then I met a police officer that offered a piece of advise - He told me "An officer has to be able to see you to radar you and if he can see you, you can see him" I threw away my radar detector the next day and started paying attention and I have only had 5 tickets since and 4 of those 5 were at night. That was 14 years ago.

As it was said anything less than a V1 your are wasting your money.
If you do not like in one of these states get a Laser jammer http://www.guysoflidar.com/usa-laser-jammer-laws.html. If the police are using LIDAR in your area, by the time the VI goes off you been tagged, you my be lucky and got some scatter off another car to give you enough warning, but you do not want to chance it. Since I gotten my V1 and being a vigilant drive I have not gotten any tickets and that is over 10yrs and I can say I am generally above the speed limit. |

I wonder about parents some time putting an M5 in the hands of an 18yr, but then again, I built an 350HP hot road at that age and my parent had no ideal what i was putting into the engine. |

OP, I understand the thrill of going fast and also of being 18 years old. Most here are just trying to give you some good advice. A radar detector is not going to save you from tickets unless you learn to choose the right times to go fast and where the local cops are. It's all about situational awareness. Be smart.
Speeding on 2 lane rural roads is not a good idea. I suggest that you save the speed for nice corners and go relatively slow on the straights. Straight line speed is boring and certainly not challenging. You are tempting fate and your driver's license with your attitude and lack of common sense. You or your parents are probably paying high insurance rates now and soon even higher due to the tickets. Thanks, Mike. |
