Well, that is the debate of Type I ethics versus Type II ethics. People generally accept that stealing a tangible object is wrong, but downloading music is looked upon as wrong, but for the most part, is a widely acceptable practice.

i'll buy cds when they get cheap i honestly think a new cd from the store should cost 5 bucks not 20 which is a complete rip off, it probably cost them 3 bucks in china to make them probably less. I feel if they were to make cd's cheaper people would actually buy them, but until then torrents are my best friends.

You should learn about multiplication, if i have a relatively modest collection of 5000 downloaded songs, i would have paid about as much in dollars. Not an insignificant number.
Wow. How many years did it take for you to build up this collection? 3,4,5? So we are talking about $1000-$1700 per year? Seems like a fairly small percentage of your income compared to the hours of entertainment you've received.

I just can't get my head around someone wanting to get something for nothing. It astounds me. Someone spent their time and energy to create that music and they deserve to get paid for it. If you don't like the price, listen to the radio for free.

I use to look for every way under the sun to not pay for my music. But as of late I have been getting it through itunes..Im a mac guy, the music is there its easy I find what I want and get it. Be it 1 song or an entire album..No complaints. On a side note I will still find a occasional torrent to get something that is very obscure and non mainstream...(One has to keep the skills up)

Haven't pirated a song in years and I LOL at anyone who has the money for a BMW but is too poor to buy a $1 song. Talk about ghetto rich.

When I was younger, I'd go out of my way just to get songs for free. Now, that I'm older, out of college, and can afford to do so, I'd gladly pay for 320 kbps songs and support the artists I like.

Nooooo to iTunes. I like listening to my music on other players and like to be able to edit tracks if I pay for them.

I have hundreds of CDs I bought. I will not buy much more, that is for sure. I never did like the sound quality of CD compared to LP. But for convenience, I bought CDs. If Super Audio CD would have done something significant in the marketplace, I would buy more. But as it is, I don't even have an SACD player.

i feel bad for those thousands of artists out there who spend $XX,XXX to record an album and are not making any money cause people arent buying their stuff. but 1$ for a song is too much

and an album is like 15 bucks which is pretty much $1 a song, but i only buy albums from artists i really really like, and except for the album i bought last week, i haven't bought one since 2006. but tomorrow im picking up another 2 which are being released! everything else, i download

I havn't payed for a song in forever. The only thing I feel a bit bad about is the artist. But, most of the music I listen to is older...from artists/bands that have been around.

If the artist makes $50 million instead of $100 Million cause of pirating, I can't say I care. I think they'll get over it. And yes, if it was me I'd get over it, too.

I have about 5000 songs, no way would I have that if I had to pay $1 a song lol...

I buy songs, some albums for myself personally. But I mostly use iTunes for my business to make playlists. The genius recommendations are also really handy for new music you wouldn't otherwise find.

I have about 600 purchased songs from iTunes over the past few years, and over 20,000 songs I have from other sources I didn't pay for.

A year and half probably.

You don't seem to understand that i complain most about the cost of the download. When the price is the same when you buy it in the form of a CD or data, why would you download?

The whole idea behind discouraging people from downloading music using illegal sources is to offer competitive pricing. They clearly aren't.

And maybe if people started actually paying for the entertainment that they are getting instead of stealing it CD's would cost less money.

The bottom line is that people who steal music do it because they lack the integrity to do the right thing when there are no consequences. Plain and simple. All of the excuses are just a way of trying to cover up and reconcile moral failures. As a musician myself I know how much effort and time goes into these recordings and the people out there stealing the music really should take a look at the mirror, get some integrity, and stop stealing from other people.

It's generally cheaper to pay for a downloadable album than a CD. Most album downloads are about 10 bucks regardless of how many tracks there are. You also get instant gratification. If I buy a cd, I need to go to the store to buy it, rip it to my computer, sync to devices, and then I have more physical media to store. With iTunes, it takes 2 steps and 2 minutes. Buy Album...Sync to Device.

I can't wait until physical media dies. This goes for music, video games, and movies.

To me at least it isn't an issue of cost so much as it is one of principle and happiness. There is a certain fulfillment that comes with piracy

video games?...

i agree with you tho. CDs are becoming a bit old now, they do need to create a better way to distribute music (as well as other media) besides downloading online...it is annoying to rip them and sync, but its nice to have a little take-home "gift" album case with the book and everything lol

the only music i've paid for in the past 4-5 years is everything MGMT has on iTunes lol.

torrents for me. i don't care about the principle. the fact is, my contributions will amount to 0.000000000001% of what these artists will be making.

So it is within your ethical code to steal things when you don't think they are worth the money or you don't have enough money to afford them? If affording the music is too much for you, why don't you treat it like everything else that isn't worth the money for you and just go without?

And the argument that artists get a large portion of their money from concerts is incorrect. The vast majority comes from selling music, and the money they do get from giving concerts materializes in goods bought at the concert.

It is sad to see how many people lose all sense of right and wrong when the consequences are taken away.
