My E46 320D turbo and engine died because of that flap.

From what I was told, the flap is on the exhaust side of the engine. Some of the exhaust gas gets recirculated into the inlet manifold, before the turbos.

Due to high temperatures and a design/materiel flaw, the flap attachment melts and the part gets sucked into the turbo and then into the engine itself.

I'm not an expert in engine mechanics, but that's pretty much how it was explained to me.

End of story: despite being out of warranty, BMW covered engine + turbo + manifold replacement Total cost would have been around 10.000 euros.

Oh so it does get sucked ''through'' the turbo and mullering it as it does it!

That must be something else. The swirl flaps are in the inlet manifold, categorically. Many failed, mainly due to EGR deposits, and get sucked into the engine. Perhaps bits could go "through" the engine and into the exhaust-side of the turbo but I doubt it.

So explain why the majority with engine failures due to this had mullered turbo's too.

Also what about victims whose turbo's died and were fortunate the flaps didnt make it to the engine.

I can only assume that the flaps broke and in some cases the broken parts fell down the inlet pipe and into the compressor that way.

Xenon's right, he has to be..

The swirl flaps are in the inlet manifold branches right before the cylinder head ports.

The tiniest parts will destroy a turbo turbine, parts of a failed swirl flap will easily pass through the combustion chamber along with any munched bits of flap / valves / piston then blow out through the exhaust port into the turbine side of the turbo.....

This makes no sense, if the flap was on the exhaust side (which it isn't) it would only munch the turbo and could never get back into the engine...

Not possible, busted flaps must pass through engine first!!

Smile popped turbo

i have just got my car back from the dealers today and the turbo is fine.
the problem was a fuel injector had snapped and broke a flange which took out the high pressure fuel pipe and a couple of other little bits.the smoke from the back of the car was a gush of diesel being burned and the smoke at the front was diesel on the engine from the pipe.
on the positive side the car did not catch fire and on the negative side it has cost me £754 to be put right.
the dealer was good though and did put me through the 4+ cover which gave me a discount of £120 as my car was classed as 4 years old even though its 3yrs 2 months which was excellent.

money better in my pocket i suppose.

many thanx for all your replies and your help on this subject.
