i'm now wondering about these shims...where exactly do these go and if we have the backlash setup right now is there any reason to check these shims? gear pattern?

Naw, if you got it setup right and you don't have any vibration or lift throttle issues, I would say your good.

But to answer your question, shims go on the right or left side of varying thicknesses to raise or lower backlash. Sounds like someone was sleeping the first time. I would say just keep an eye on it for a while. Maybe even change the fliud at about 1K more miles.

I won't know if there's lift throttle/vibration issues until its put back though this is why I'd like to ensure everything is checked before its put back in...

where do the shims go, you say left/right but can you explain in a bit more detail? these are not on the carrier right, you're talking on/around pinion and you'd be setting pinion depth, right, or am I way off?? If these shims are added in wouldn't that affect backlash?

No, the side shims also do backlash.

Good explaination

http://www.differentials.com/install.html
Shim Design: Some differentials use shims between the carrier bearing races and the housing and some use shims between the carrier bearing and the carrier case. Carrier bearing preload is established by the tightness of the shims. The carrier should be shimmed tight enough that it must be tapped in with a plastic dead blow hammer. While holding the races on the bearings (and outside shims on the races) start the carrier into the housing and tap it in with the hammer. Install the carrier caps according to the marks made during disassembly. Check the backlash. If the backlash is too wide, move or add shims to the left side. If the backlash is too tight, move or add shims to the right side. (If the carrier is snug, move and replace the same thickness; if the carrier is too tight or too loose, remove or add shims accordingly.)

This is exactly the shims we discovered were putin backwards on initial swap. They're actually metal c-clamp style of varying width. So I guess we are ok if with these shims in place we have the backlash we're looking for...

About the same time they changed to OCs on SPP steps. Mid april/may of 2007.

Yep, either someone did not mark the caps or was just out to lunch. I think you should be good now. I would drive with the music off for a few days.

Subscribed. I have a May 2007 6MT E90. I can't get good traction under heavy throttle and it's getting frustrating! I know some good tires will help, but an LSD would be the best for maintaining traction while cornering.

It could go either way. In EU, I would say your luck is better than on this side of the pond.

UPDATE: Diff was fully inspected on the bench, backlash adjusted as per spec, 0.004", (was more than double that initially) using side shims on drive axle shafts, new snap rings and seals put on drive axle shafts, pinion wasn't pulled as it was never touched/removed by the original installer but pinion depth and gear pattern were checked with paint and its spot on so pinion depth is fine.

We reassembled everything back on the car replacing all bolts that are recommended to be replaced, along with a new insert nut, clip and seal. Everything torqued to spec as per Bentley Manual, driveshaft reinstalled as per bentley manual (fastening tranny side first then diff side then center bearing with the right preload (pushed 2-3mm towards the front of the car and torqued up).

After ALL this, the thump and vibration are STILL THERE F$&@"&&@@&

Car's going back in tomorrow morning, we'll run it on the lift with the wheels suspended and concentrate on the driveshaft. I'm glad we got the diff mystery out of the way at least now that I know 110% it's setup right. More to follow tomorrow...

Agree. My 04/17/2007 production date 6mt e92 was welded. Talk with Harold at HP autowerks if you are serious about doing it. I can't praise his service and parts quaility enough.

Stock is on the left, Quaife on the right.

Tune, Meth, and LSD are the top 3 mods IMHO.
