Gents - what is the difference that nitrogen makes to the tyres? Better wear-in?

not too sure but I have heard that it drastically helps with road noise.

Nitrogen doesn't expand with heat like air so your tyres will stay at the same pressure. It also doesn't leak out like air therefore less requirement to re-inflate. "Apparently" tyres might last longer but I find this hard to beleive.

Thanks Sam - quite interesting - so where do you go to get nitrogen in your tyres? Any of the standard tyre shops?

Considering air is 78% nitrogen anyway, I suspect that using it has fairly marginal benefit. Sounds to me like some really good marketing spin but I stand to be corrected ;-)

Race cars use nitrogen - F1 / V8 Supercars etc- but as I mentioned previously, I think the main benefit is that the pressure remains constant as it doesn't expand like air does with heat.

48 hours after purchasing a 320d I blew a RFT on a pothole
I cursed hard as u can imagine I have REO50A RFT 255/40/r17on the rear i would like to replace them could someone out there plz advise. I am willing to replace the RFT with normal performance tyres. Is it possible to install normal tires on rear and RFT on front ?? OR do you have to fit 4 tyres of the same tech on each corner. Advice on good "wet & noise free" normal tyres would be gratefully appreciated Thanks in advance |

Sorry to hear of your bad luck, it must have been a pretty big hit to blow out a tyre unless there was something wrong with the tyre. Why don't you tell your dealer about it, maybe they can help you out if you had just purchased the car.
I wouldn't mix RFT and non-RFT tyres. I don't think it makes any sense to buy a BMW and fit it with any combination of mismatched tyres of any tyres, much less RFT tyres with hugely different stiffness in the sidewalls. I think that Michelin Preceda PP2 is a reasonably priced sports/performance tyre that is oriented towards good wet weather peformance. I have 18" PP2's on my car, but you shouldn't have any trouble getting the 17" staggered sizes. |

It is probably a cheaper option to consider just replacing the one tyre ($530 was my best quote recently for the 255/40 17) and hope for the best or purchase BMW Tyre and Rim Insurance (which I did for our E91).
For enjoyment of the car, swapping to premium non-RFTs makes excellent sense as long as you also purchase a spare, brace and jack. And you *must* have matching tyres on each corner. I did run unmatched RFT/non-RFT for a couple of weeks and it did feel odd when you started to push. I splurged on Michelin Pilot Sports and, in all honesty, the improvement is such that they would seem good value if I'd tossed away near-new 050A RFTs. As for other options, when I was recently shopping for alternatives I was narrowing it down to PS2's, Pilot Precedas or, cheaper again (and not as good but fair value IMHO), Bridgestone Adrenaline RE001s.

Obviously I agree. Mainly the difference in ride quality is worth it, especially for Sydney roads. No need to throw away brand new tyres though. I sold my set of staggered 17" Bridgestone RFT II on ebay. The one guy paid $605 for the front pair of 225, and $405 for the 255 rears. If I sold them together as a set of 4, I probably could have got $1,200 or better. There were quite a few bidders - although I probably should have realised people prefer to buy a complete set of 4. That was about 6 months ago, soon after I took delivery of the car.

On with the story
Thanks for the input, I did take the car back to the BMW dealer on the advice of my local bridgestone dealer who advised that they should not have sold a vehicle with defective tyres ( the remaining tyres did not have the 4mm tread across the surface as specified by the 100 point check conducted and advertised with premium selection vehicles)
BMW replaced the rest (3)at no cost which i count as very good customer service. So 2 weeks after delivery i have 4 new tyres im thinking im golden...............NO. 1 week later i pull another puncture but wait, I am told that some RFT are repairable some are not. I have 1 repairable the one replaced after the first puncture but the last batch of 3 are non repairable. This current puncture has left my car in the bmw dealership because there are no tyres at my requested size in stock. My question is this, I have been informed that BMW has a policy that they will replace your tyre with one from a new stock vehicle within 2 days if they cannot source its replacement from normal rft stock. I cannot believe my luck this will be tyre number 5 Ive had the car less than 4 weeks |
