There is definitely an optical sensor that will dim the screen according to ambient light. It's the small round hole in the dead center bottom of the iDrive screen. If you go through a tunnel or something during the day (or pull into a dark garage from bright sunlight) you'll see the auto dimming.

However, that being said, the dimming (IMHO) is very subtle and not nearly enough to negate the need for Night Mode on the display at night. You are correct in that the color scheme in Night Mode is noticeably easier on the eyes at night AND helps maintain good night vision in the cabin.

Have you adjusted the dislplay brightness? May help? Glare is sometimes a problem for me.

My brightness is set for about 40-45%. Any lower than that and it starts to look washed out for me. Night mode is SO much better at night than just letting it dim automatically.

I know I've said this before, but I love how informed you guys are about Idrive and NAV. Pleasure to read your posts.

I'm new to the iDrive. It doesn't seem to dim enough at night, but there are certainly at night, but there are a lot of usable features.
