The real question is how much power is going to be extracted from it via tuning. More aggressive ecu hardware and software was most def put in the N55 to stop tuning at a limit. The ECU is mounted on the engine! by the intake manifold.

And how much can be tuned that the bmw anti-tuning kicks in to stop the fun.
Like when you trip tuner codes when you push the tune too aggressive, you lose tq and such until you re-start the car or until you trip it again.

BT cable is going to be a 100% must have with no excuses with N55.
wow, that sucks.. the N54 will be looked back upon as a classic, grab one while you can, lol..

i suspect the n55 will have better top end power than the n54, mainly because the single they show in the pics looks to me like it could be ample sized (unlike the tiny td03s we have).

but we'll see.

if you can harness the power of valvetronic... the n55 is gonna be better than n54 right off the bat... think of the tuning possibilities with control of variable valve lift...

bmw already got the n55 to have a lower peak tq despite moving to a single turbo. only valvetronic could have done that. who knows how tuner friendly it will be but if it turns out to be pretty easy, oh boy....

Yeah, if tuning it is easy the N55 is gonna be a beast.

Give tuners a good two years and these N55's are really going to see some nice numbers.

I am curious, what was the feedback from testing the 5-series GT which has the N55 for some time now ? The 5GT is quite a bit heavier but I think the engine's dynamics could be somewhat felt...

Valvetronic offers some really interesting tuning possibilities to be sure but you have to remember that such a complex system is almost certainly going to be more fragile. Also, don't forget that the N55 loses ~40lbs so its probably not as stout as the N54.

Hopefully I'm wrong on both of these points but I doubt it...

Officially, the point it's fuel economy, but I suspect most of the economy comes from the new 8-speed auto (also most of the weight reduction comes from it), the real reason is...cost.

I doubt that the N55 costs less. In another N55 related thread, I quoted a well respected engineer from the blog GreenCarCongress who referred to valvetronic as "hideously expensive" and "similar in complexity to a swiss watch." Whatever money BMW saves by going to a single twin scroll turbo and by using less material will surely be offset by the increased cost of the valvetrain.

The 8 speed auto helps with fuel economy, especially if it includes ZF's optional integral start/stop function. Valvetronic on its own is good for ~7% increase in fuel economy. BMW quotes the N55 as getting 10% better fuel economy compared to the N54. IMO, the N55 will get ~15% better real world fuel economy if it gets mated to the ZF 8spd auto.

40 lbs. lighter, 10% better fuel economy, better power curve & improved driveability -- sounds PDG to me.

This is going to be all-season daily driver to replace my gas-guzzling RR Sport, so a 335iS is kinda outta the question. I need some sort of AWD. I'm just sick of SUVs.

I love modding my vehicles to my taste and liking. With this I was planning on going with and Eisenmann Sport exhaust (or another quieter exhaust without a drone), afe DCI, AA BOV, Helix, AMS, or Code3 FMIC, and a safe, reliable tune, a nicer piggy-back would have been ok.

My basic goal was to mod it and have it be as fast as my E90 M3 (which I bought thinking it was going to be enough for a daily driver, until we got a half foot of snow ), but also safe and reliable. And a car I can live with driving every day and even long distances.

What is auto-high beam?

And why not get an 335is x-drive? Won't the new ones still have the N54 in it? I thought only the newer E90 gets the N55 engine..........

Auto high beams turn your brights on when it's dark enough and it doesn't detect oncoming headlights or reflections from your own lights.

He bought an E90. There is on E90 335is. It only comes in E92/3 flavor.

So considering GIAC just got into the game with their flash, and now BMW is switching to the N55 engine, won't they be pissed? Their market will be restricted to only the N54's out there, until they take another 3 years to develop the next flash for the N55?

I'm sure the number of N54's out there now are not small, if that's all they'd be able to tap into, but I'd rather have a product that's aimed at existing cars out there as well as ones coming out til the end of the current life cycle.

I meant why not get an E92 x-drive, because they still have the N54 in it, no?

Sorry I should have clarified what I was suggesting....

The x-drive will also have the N55. 335xi is not the same as 335is.

Okay, so all x-drives regardless if it's sedan or coupe will have the N55? And all others such as the 335is coupe and sedan will have the N54?

I thought I read somewhere that only the new E90s will have N55s? Didn't know the engine is diff between x-drives and is models......

Is that correct?

To my understanding you're pretty much right. New e90s and e92s will receive the N55 and may be ordered with or without xdrive. The new 335is is only available as an e92 with the n54 and without xdrive.

If someone can get us a car, we can have dp/exhaust/fmic developed fairly quickly.
