And kill the environment while you're at it, never mind it's actually BAD for the car to let it idle like that. Great advice.

Even google it and you'll see: http://www.consumerenergycenter.org/myths/idling.html

A remote starter is such a waste. Not to mention that its bad for the environment and you just waste gas. Just get in the car and drive.

Thats exactly why BMW is putting the autostop/start function on its cars in Europe. To reduce the waste of fuel while sitting at a stoplight. And when you come to a train crossing, it is mandatory to switch off the engine untill the train clears.

Just drive the car after 30 seconds. Dont let it sit there and idle to let itself warmup.

so the fact that the car takes forever to warm up is a problem? isn't that a testament to good cooling?

yeah, yeah, instant gratification and all that jazz..

good link Glowing.

i don't have a remote starter just because I'll never use it cause I am lazy that way, but i don't think its bad for people who need it. some places are so cold that you try to sit in a freezing car at subzero temperatures until it warms up.

I guess you two still believe in the bullshit mith of global warming.

Do you really think letting your car idle for a few minutes will destroy the environment??? hahahaha that is so stupid

You can let your car idle for 10 years and it wont produce as much smog or pollution as some factory in china or wherever in 10 minutes.

so the bottom line is warm up your car before you get in, if you need to, and enjoy your day.

Oh and since when is letting your car idle bad for your car??? so its better to start revving it up and taking off in a cold engine??

P.S. and I'll be dead millions of years before the environment gets so bad that it'll kill me, so I could care less.

and you know what? those regions in china will feel the effects of pollution much sooner than it will affect the climate. but because people right now can't see/feel a tangible negatives they disregard the problem. people think that the individual can't make a difference. imagine if everyone in your neighborhood left their car on for an hour day for no reason. how do you think the air around your neighborhood is going to be?

i'm not saying, that if you live in cold climates you should forget about your comfort and bring a space blanket to your car. i paid good money for my car and to be comfortable, and enjoy it. just saying we should be aware of what we do.

You could care less huh? What about your children? Your grandchildren? Or your Grandchildrens children? Still care less? Thats the problems with most people in the U.S. Nobody cares unless the outcome directly effects them.

We're all gonna die. The earth will warm 2'C in 100 years from burning fossil fuels...but even the oil companies say we'll run out of [reachable] fossil fuels in 50 years.

Re warm-up: yes aluminum engines in cold weather kinda take a while to heat up. There's probably just way too much heat loss via the aluminum block and oil pan in really cold temp. We need a clever block heater or oil/water heat exchanger of some kind.

Automatic car starters do waste a bit of gas but until you live in a climate where it's cold, you shouldn't bash them.

I loved my G35 with remote (phone->satellite->car!) starting. I'm sure I wasted a bit of gas (maybe 10% mpg decrease), but it was heaven when it was snowing outside, other people were chiseling ice and snow off their cars and I just hopped in mine and drove home because the defrost melted everything for me.

I'm still kicking myself for getting a 6MT because I can't run a remote starter. But then again, doesn't BMW heavily frown on these sorts of gadgets? Does anyone actually have one installed (esp by the dealer, when new)?

I wait around 200*F before i go WOT...or use high RPM's..

According to bmw it is not good to let the car idle for a long period of time, i wait until the RPm's have settled and let it idle for a few seconds after that and im off at a slow grandmas pace until 200*.

YOU have OBVIOUSLY never gotten into a car when it's been sitting outside in the single digits or even colder. I don't give a shit about the environment, if it's that cold outside I'd kill baby seals if it made my car's cabin warm up faster.

+1. I only commute 3 miles to work everyday. No reason to take the bimmer out of the garage for 5 minutes of commuting. That's why I bought a beast of the motorcycle to ride around. A nice Honda Ruckus 50cc pocket rocket.

Stationed in Germany and never had a garage to park in. Car sat outside all winter.

I've have an urban bicycle, it's a Kona with disc brakes and a luggage rack, it's too cold to ride it right now but I did in the summer. I also have a Honda CBR600F4i that I ride too.
