when i bought my car, after all was said and done i paid about just under $40,000.

at the same time, BMW Toronto had a similar car for sale. it had the same packages but had double the mileage. They had it listed for $51,000.

This is why I say I saved about $10,000

Just went through this. Basically there are two options - get one from any dealer in Canada (usually cost money) or get one from ANY BMW dealer in the US. I've got it for free. In either case, you will need to show proof of ownership - I sent scan of purchase agreement and title)

It looks like importing is only worth it if you are getting the "more expensive" cars.
I am looking at some used S2000's priced in the low-mid $20k's, the cost saving isn't that much compared to buying a local one, after factoring in the time/gas as well. Plus, I'll have to deal with the car not being local if i decide to sell it later.

Was the car subject to Excise tax (Green Levy on fuel inefficient cars)?

I'm looking to bring in an M3 and not sure if this is applicable.

Vehicles are taxed, based on weighted average fuel consumption, at the following rates:

* At least 13, but less than 14 litres per 100 km: $1,000
* At least 14, but less than 15 litres per 100 km: $2,000
* At least 15, but less than 16 litres per 100 km: $3,000
* 16 or more litres per 100 km: $4,000

I'm glad you brought this up. I was at the border crossing about 20 mins ago and decided to pop in and ask what the 'green tax' would be on importing a BMW. First off, anything 2006 and earlier doesn't have to pay the tax, secondly most models have zero tax BUT it looks like any M model you can pay up to $4000 green tax!!!!!!

we should try to accumulate more information, would love to bring back a m3 or m5 but the green tax maybe a turnoff...5 series prices have dropped since the introduction of the f10.

I have just confirmed the Excise tax (Green Levy) on the following.

2008-2010 M3 Sedan, M3 Coupe = $0 (exempt).
2008-2010 M3 Cabriolet = $1000

2008-2010 M5 (auto trans) = $2000
2008-2010 M5 (manual trans) = $4000

2008-2010 M6 (auto trans) = $2000 (Coupe or Cab)
2008-2010 M6 (manual trans) = $4000 (Coupe or Cab)

None M, 5 and 6 series are exempt too.
