i'd move right out...but i dont think u need to worry about your car being stolen...they only steal easy to steal cars like older gen hondas/toyotas..i believe those are most susceptible to theft.

I spend alot of time in Newark and have a love/hate relationship with the city. Yes, there are absolutely neighborhoods that I would feel save living in.. however I've made the choice not to do so.

If i were new to the area and were going to be working at UMD I would look for housing in the nearby towns along the RT. 21, RT 22, and I-280 Corridors, as those are the main points of entry into the city. A few come to mind that would have you in university heights in 15 minutes (kearny/north arlington/lyndhurst via route 21) (union/kenilworth/roselle park via route 22) (maplewood, south orange, bloomfield via GSP/280)

+1

I live in Newark and I agree with JoeShmo. Find a place in a surrounding town, its quick to get to UMDNJ from any of the highways so that wont be a problem.

As far as the Ironbound, always a great time but not a lot of elbow room there.

it's not only the theft... it's also how crowded it is in that area and within a week, his car would look like an older gen honda and probably on blocks and burnt at the multiplex. HAHAHA... j/k Skim

Honestly, I'd say look for a place in the 'burbs outside of Newark (Clifton, Garfield, etc) and drive/ take the train in to work. Newark has one of the highest theft rates out of any city in the world

Best advice! You should definitely find a place OUTSIDE of newark.

IMO the Ironbound is the way to go. My wife and I own a couple rental properties there so if you are set on living in Newark and looking for a place send me a pm.
I don't think Newark is as bad as it used to be, we have actaully even considered staying in one of the apts during the week since its so close to our jobs. (we currently live in Brick). I'm more worried about some idiot hitting my car when they are parralel parking rather than getting it stolen.

Bloomfield is not so bad. Close to Newark. Has a BMW dealer within the city limits.

Yea, I gotta say Newark is not the best place to live in. Definitely look into the surrounding towns near a train station or as others said, along Rt. 22, 280, etc... You will find that the commute is not so bad, and worth it to live in a safer, (and subjectively) nicer area.

And although not as good as it used to be, I really like Brazilia's for rodizio...

...and big booty latinas
