A fair question would be what Mr. wrtworld's expectations are for the lifespan of the car. As Mike Miller points out, pretty much anything can make it to 100k with little maintenance. And most American’s are happy with that.

This discussion about preventative maintenance practices only applies to those of us who think the machine should run reliably well past that, operate in a harsh environment or care about machinery on basic principles.

So those of you leasing or looking at 100k as the lifetime of the car -- relax. Those of us kicking around these maintenance issues are not a threat to you and we are not insulting you. We just have a different balance of risk/expectations/costs.

Something else to toss into the equation is the expected life of the car, considering factors OUTSIDE your control. IE: I had a e92 for a several years after the warrantee, kept up the servicing and treated it really nice. And got hit by a taxi. So even tho it lasted 115k miles, and was running like it could go to 200k easily, the expenses I'd put into it were made pointless. So if you do a lot of city driving where you have to depend on the quality of driving of others, then keep that in mind when you start dropping serious bucks in the car's mid-life in the expectation you are investing in a lone-life car. (Or at least until someone comes up with a good mod that includes Kevlar and self-healing metal.)
