I used to drive the same way. Didn't make much difference in the 330i, but the mpg in the 335i seems very dependant on gearing.

The ED gear shift indicator (now switched off) tries to get you into high gear straight away. I tried it myself with the instant read out on and it really does have an impact. Doesn't slow me down either.

Around town stuck in heavy traffic I get around 21mpg. Driving as carefully as I can on the motorway I can get 40.3mpg.

I only get 27.6mpg town driving. That's going as easy as I can to get the mpg up

Booked into the stealers as I think that I should be getting better than that.

Any diesel engine will have its economy crippled if it's only driven around town. Reset the OBC, get it out for half an hour or an hour up a dual carriageway or motorway (at the speed limit) and see what happens

The ED shift 'indicator' points reflect the shift points used in the official MPG test, so that's how you have to drive to match the test criteria!!

Manual 'box shift points were fixed in the test (and thus not the best for many cars) unless the manufacturer provided shift instructions, the shift indicator is that 'instruction' so our cars can vary from the old style fixed shift test thus acheiving more MPG without any other alterations.

The shift indicator gave the single largest increase in official MPG of any ED addition. This proves its all BS as this was done without any change to the car, only a change which enabled the test to be 'fiddled'

Interesting. In a funny sort of way, I think that is a valid approach.

If I hadn't had the gear shift indicator I would probably have driven this car around town like any other car I have owned:

1st gear up to 20mph
2nd gear up to 30mph
3rd gear for cruising around 30mph
4th gear for cruising around 40mph

I would never have imagined that shifting up a couple more gears at 30mph would make a real difference, but it's actually quite substantial. Doesn't make much difference to driving enjoyment either - once you are at 30mph around town you don't need to accelerate much, so sticking it in a high gear isn't an issue.

BMW ED MPG figures just seem like pie in the sky, although I think the tests done to determine MPG are basically standardised across all manufacturers basically.

Someone at work got a 320d ED last year, and he's averaging 47MPG - 12 off the claimed average, and only 2 more than his pre ED 320d on the same commute (so 4 off claimed for that).

By contrast I average 43MPG is a pre-ED 330d which is only 3 off claimed MPG.

Having always driven Audi's before I got my 330d, I tended to always get the claimed average. For example I used to average 50MPG in a 2.0TDi Sport A3, but this was capable of massive MPG if you took it steady. Managed to get a stunning 72MPG average on the trip computer after a 60mph run from Bristol to Leeds once!!

The emissions / mpg test is a global standard now, based on the original EU test.

Everyone does the same test on approved rolling road labs, often at manufacturers facilities and witnessed by officials, but the tests are setup and driven by manufacturers engineers who obviously have a benfit from obtaining the best possible results whilst operating as close as possible to the rules.

Nowadays its all about the test, more than anything else so the efficieny measures are only about doing better in the 'test' rather than in the real world.

Although ultimately its all good as it drive the manufacturers in the right direction.

I've listened to you all and come to the conclusions that it's probably very unlikely that there is a difference in MPG between a pre and post ED 335d.

So i stopped waiting for a 57/08 335d and just bought an 07 which if all goes to plan i should pick up next week sometime. Lets say if hypothetically it did actually do 2-4mpg worse, for the money i've saved buying it over an 08 plate one i could probably fuel it on the difference for 10 years on my miles.
