I use the Shark cordless hand vac. Powerful enough for the car, and charge lasts ~15 minutes which is good for 2-3 uses. The brush attachment is great on carpeted areas.

We bought a shop vac specifically for this purpose. Got tired of shitty hand helds and beating the crap out of the household vac when dragging it outside. Plus now we have a Dyson, way too pricey to be using for this.
The best buy was a 9 gal from Sears on sale $40, for $15 extra you can pick up a car detailing kit that comes with a long hose and lots of attachments to help clean vents, tight spaces. etc.
Bonus= suddenly you find all sorts of things that you need the shop vac for

Can the Shark vac get into tight areas like between the seats, or even under them?

EuroShark is a good AC mains powered small sized hand vac, it has as much suction as many large sized home type vacuums.

Been very convenient and didn't cost me as I got it through my Bank of America rewards.

$19.99

This one is better:

Mine came with all sorts of attachments. Also has a HEPA filter = less dust...

It won't really suck the chrome off of a trailer hitch, but it will do a great job on deep carpet dirt for a coardless.. The bat is just OK for longevity running, but it's a big NiCd and holds a charge very well in your trunk. If you use a vac only when detailing your car, get a sohop vac, but for a coardless that can be used on a whim... its the M6 of hand vacs. I love coardless vacs for the car, and after trashing a few dustbusters (and replacing filters, sig cost) the Dyson is great. Plus, the ladies go nuts for bling vacs. Whip this thing out when you're cruising Taco Bell on Friday night and you'll see why they call it the p-magnet of vacuums.

does your car get that dirty?

I usually just use tape to remove the dirt and lint.
