I have been trying. Sadly, the tracking system for boats in the Atlantic is saying the last time the Patriot reported in was Dec 21 (when it was coming back from its last voyage). Not sure why that is.

W-W web site is now showing 1/9/07 projected arrival in NY.

Looks like it's un-bloody-likely that we'll have our cars for the MLK weekend.

Must be some unfavorable sea conditions. The NY arrival is now posted at 1/10/2007. So much for getting into the car prior to the long weekend.

Yeah, I noticed that at the last check-in she was moving at only 13 knots, down from 30 knots previously.

Isn't 30 knots exceptionally fast for a vessel of that size? I thought cruise ships do 25 -27 knots. Any mariners out there?

Now moving at 35 knots and finally changed heading. That is the most odd sailing path I have ever seen??

Maybe something to do with either wind, waves, or currents? Remember that you're doing vector arithmetic here -- they're on a heading in a medium that's got its own speed and direction.

I looked at the SailWX web site, and one column is labeled "SOA".

I did a little Googling, and am wondering if that is "speed of advance", which I'm guessing would be the net groundspeed. Kinda like groundspeed in an aircraft -- if the airspeed is 550 MPH but there's a 50 MPH headwind, groundspeed is actually 500 MPH.

Anybody have any ideas? This is TOTAL speculation on my part!!

The "Liberty" has not updated GPS coordinates since 12-30-06...

Speed of advance (SOA) is the speed a ship would travel through the water at any given shaft (propellor) rotation, not taking into account any external forces such as set and drift.
