Since everyone is just considering appearances, someone might want to raise the issue of performance and potholes.

Once you get over 17", the overall performance suffers and weight increases.

In addition, the larger the tire the thinner the sidewall - how are the roads in your area? Are they good enough for very short sidewalls?

I think 20s with a lip and a good drop look awesome on the e9x.

IMO it depends on what type of driver you are. If you are a cruiser and are not racing the car around, 20's + a drop. But make sure you have money to repair them because you will bend them and eventually have to replace the barrels.

If you are a racer and are looking for performance and you dont want to have to keep repairing them, 19's all the way.

But I dont care what anyone says, 20's look hot on a e9x. for example...

I have 19s... I think with the right set of 19s e92s look perfect. With the right set of 20s e92s look perfect!
it all depends on the wheel and the suspension

i agree with this guy. i was in the same debate. It also depends on the drop. if you get 19's and get H&R SPORT springs there will be a slight gap. If you get RACE springs. the gap is gone. Or you can get 20's and it will fit easily but i decided 19's. heres a pic of mine. with 19 on H&R RACE

Since you asked, 20" wagon wheels with rubber band tires look ridiculous on any vehicle IMO, especially a BMW 3-Series. Anything bigger than 18" is overkill. The increased unsprung weight at the corners = reduced acceleration and degraded braking. The tires cost a lot more too...
