I guess I don't really understand what exactly has been approved for production.
We know that the VED concept shown in the OP has aboslutely no chance of being turned into a production vehicle as is. Really, the only thing we could hope to expect from a production car is a body that follows the basic silhouette, and something similar to the powertrain. Moreover, I cannot imagine the VED will have its own unique platform, nor will its name actually be VED (though that could show up as a sub-title or sub-branding). This could be anything from a brand new halo car to a mere offshoot of an existing (or future version of a) regular BMW model. |

My understanding is that the powertrain of the VED was approved for production, but they'll need more time to finish its development. Hence, the car starts in 2013 with an 'old school' engine, and the VED drivetrain will be made available when they're done with the development some time later.
As to the body, sure the final car will look different, but not by much (I hope). It's basically the huge glass doors and the shaped/rolled bumpers what's not feasible. The VED will be a project i car sharing some elements/principles with the MCV. Best regards, south

I have a feeling those hoping for a super car/halo car for BMW are going to be very disappointed. My guess is a car with ~7ish second 0-60 but getting around 70 mpg since their emphasis seems to be on efficiency not speed/handling.

south, I can see how the powertrain is very feasible, but I think that the body itself is far from a realistic production car. I think the car will look similar to the dontblogaboutthis car which is already wearing what looks to be a production version of the VED front end:
In addition to the obvious glass doors you mention, I don't see the giant flared/finned fenders on the VED concept making it to production. Rather it will be similar to the F12/F13 6 series surfacing on the sides: In fact, I could see the car being branded Z6 or perhaps Z8. Quote:

I'm shocked. Are they going to let it into production in current shape? I mean if they do, that's something of a breakthrough. This thing looks unlike anything BMW made to day (and I've seen it in real life, it is very cool). wow. well done! this is the R8 answer, and it's very good.

I doubt it will be branded Z6 or Z8 as these badges traditionally are associated with two-seaters. Best regards, south

"BMW VED introduces for the first time “layered surfacing”, both in interior and exterior design. BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk says “layered surfacing” creates a more cohesive and harmonious appearance while also optimizing air flow." "Q: Can the layering design be used in a production car? A: What’s important about the layering design is that we work on it every day. We’re trying through layering to create a visual lightness, along with physical lightness, in order to get the performance we need and very little fuel consumption. We need to be lighter and this is something we are definitely working on and it has a lot of potential." So, I cannot help but notice the way he dodges the question. I am skeptical that this type of body shell will be production feasible by 2013. It might be, but there's many considerations IMHO - everything from fabrication cost to end user maintenance. It's a lot to overcome IMO. In a half million dollar supercar, sure, anything would be on the table. But I think this car is targeted in the 5 figures dollar range for sure. Maybe BMW will do it at this price point, we'll see. If anyone can pull it off, it is BMW I suppose. Quote:
