What Scotch would you buy as an appropriate gift?

First, age doesn't necessarily mean a better scotch whisky. There are several scotch whiskies that are better when bottled as a younger expression. Second, look for distillers that do not add E150a, and do not chill filter their whisky. Most importantly, you need to find out what your employee might like. If, for instance, your employee doesn't like peated whiskies you'd do well not to buy him a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail (ooh-ge-dale) for instance (or any other Islay scotch for that matter). Don't be deceived into thinking that more expensive is better either. Often, lesser known distillers will give you better value for money as quality and demand are often inversely proportional.

Also remember that a distillers product will vary from year to year, indeed from batch to batch, and even from cask to cask.

BTW, Malt Advocate rates Ardbeg Uigeadeil at 95/100, and at $70 a bottle it's a bargain for what's arguably a better whisky than anything mentioned in this thread thus far (as long as you like peat). Ardbeg Corryvreckan is also very, very good, and good bang for the buck, as is Bunnahabhain 18 year, which is peated, but much less so than the two Ardbegs.

As for as non-peated whiskies go, and for a reasonable price, I'd recommend The Yamazaki 18 year (yes, it's from Japan, and it's very good). The Macallan Fine Oak 17 year is also very good. Highland Park 21 year old is also worthy of a mention.

If you're looking for some cask strength ass kickers, I can get you a list of those as well. Aberlour A'bunadh is very good for instance, but is a really sherry bomb. The Macallan also makes a good cask strength offering IIRC.

If you're really looking to spend some money and to try to find something rare that you'd almost feel ashamed to drink, look around for Brora bottlings, e.g. Brora 30 year old. Brora as a distillery has been closed for several years despite producing some great whisky, and their whisky can be a bit hard to find depending on what you're looking for.

I agree! I've tried Macallan 30 and wow, that was really smooth! We finished 4 bottles easily and wow, I was glad I didn't have to pay. I didn't know how much those things cost and we were at a club!
