on one of the forums here i read about dealerships turning in cars that have removed secondary cats due to epa regulations being illegal due to emission issue and that the owners could be fined $5000. Does anybody know if this is true or did the dealer say anything about the secondary cats being deleted? I just want to be able to go to the dealer and get my car serviced without running into issues. But I know some dealerships will bring up stupid excuses. Let me know. I think I am heading towards the secondary cats deleted now

has anyone experienced smog check failures with secondary cat deletes for e90 or e92? That is the only draw back I have before I do this mod.

Most dealers will void warranty If anything is modified. I had warranty void on my e90 when I did a resonator delete. They would not do any warranty work related to exhaust, and were very quick to blame it on modifications. Be careful if your worried about warranty.

Thats all good. I don't care about "exhaust warranty" anyway. Unless they try to group a turbo issue with the modified exhaust system. Thats a problem.

i think i am set to do muffler delete because i don't want to not be able to pass emission test in the future especially that I live in California. Also, if it too loud then i will put my stock one back on. Any other opinions?

I agree with that, I feel like getting rid of the cats would put you at a greater risk of warranty issues since it in a way affects emissions, just the way I feel.

I brought my car in for warranty work 2 times with no mufflers on it and they didn't say a thing. I was sitting inside watching TV and I saw the tech get in my car and start it to drive it around, he liked the sound and revved it right there in the service lane, could do nothing but laugh. Even after that they didn't say anything.

Just a word of warning.
I have catless downpipes on my E92. Stock exhaust the rest of the way. I just got the secondary cats replaced with a straight pipe and it sounds like shit. Rasp's like a straight pipe e46 m3. Low rpm, higher load, absolutely awful, its embarrassing.
Looking to throw in a pair of vibrant resonators mid way where the cats were instead. Hoping that takes care of it.
Wish I never took the cats out now. Just a fyi, if you plan to delete the cats with stock exhaust, at least bring some resonators to save some welding time/money.

Rasp on an E46 M3 is glorious IMO, my buddy has a gutted eisenmann race on his and it sounds amazing. I am catless DPs and muffler delete with mid cats still in place and I think my car sounds really good.

i think this is game play, buy aftermarket catback (like VANGUARD) problem solved, i was also planing to remove second cats and put catless dps but now i think its best to buy aftermarket exhaust

I can understand liking the rasp, buts it the low rpm blaaah noise that sounds the worst. From the driver seat it sounds like a honda for a few seconds until you are over 2200 rpm.

So if i were to put a resonator in place of the cats, I'd need a 2.25 pipe diameter right?
And if its past the diff area where the mufflers are , it tapers up to 2.5 right?

i don't want to spend 800 or over for a exhaust system. Plus the only reason why i want to do a muffler delete is because i want sound and not there for performance. But thanks you guys for solidifying my decision. Bakeme521 do you have a video of your car with just muffler delete and without the catless dp. I do not plan on getting catless dp.

Smog inspection in CA; 1) no check engine light on main cluster 2) visual inspection; During the inspection, your primary catalytic converter with O2 sensor is hooked up and looks in working order. 3) pass the test within limit (I do not know data... but I am sure if you have a V5 and running fuel sip mode you'd pass with flying colors).

IMHO the best exhaust system is factory with midpipes removed with 3.5" muffler tips.

I ended up with this setup:
Cat less dp
Vibrant resonators instead of the secondary cats
Stock mufflers/tips.

Sounds good enough for me.
