I hear ya, but the DWS is well reviewed on tirerack and IIRC is cheaper. Really the reason I didn't go with those is because they were back ordered in the size that I needed. I'm thinking a snow tire functions well in cold weather-snow or not, but I could be wrong. I didn't research that angle.

Only thing that turned me off about the DW is that whole "tuneable" gimmick-meaning that when the "w" wears off the tread pattern the tires are no longer "tuned" for wet conditions. Almost reminds me of the BFG colored bands to lay down colored strips during a burnout. Does a good tire need a gimmick to sell well?

if you drive in the snow, Continental DWS for daily driver. if you don't see any snow, Dunlop Direzza Z1 StarSpec.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric

This replaced the outgoing GS-D3 last year, and after going through 1 set, I have to say this tire is amazing. Dry traction is similar to the PS2, so it's solid.

Here's what stands out:

Wet traction
Reinforced sidewalls

I have tracked these tires, and the above 2 characteristics is what makes this tire shine. Everyone who has experienced my ride in the wet has pretty much mentioned this is the bet wet performance summer tire out there. In the rain, it pretty much feels like you're driving in the dry, and on wet track days, it makes you the fastest car around the track (not just me, but my friends who bought this tire at my suggestion and hit the track on an unlucky rainy day also mentioned the same).

But best of all, this is the first street tire I've EVER owned that did not wear out at the edge, despite track duty (over 15 years!). I was shocked to hear from a recent tech inspection (for my next track event) that my tires were pretty much worn (evenly) through. i was like ... 'what? i still have edges!' I was absolutely amazed!

I will take pictures and post a review in a new thread later.

Yes they do. No they didn't. A better price, better rating, better tread wear....survey sed! disclaimer: do not come over to longboys house and do nitro fuely burnouts at 2AM to protest his choice of tires over yours.

is it an immediate mod to replace the ZSP runflats on a new car purchase to non-RFTs? Are RFTs really that terrible?

Hey brudda,

I've been where you are now. Did three deployments.

As to your question, no, unless you are particular about the feel of your ride when going over bumps and such.

I kept mine for 30K miles, but some RFTs don't last that long. Mine lasted because I had a separate winter set. Like night and day with the winter set in terms of ride comfort.

star specs seem to be a really popular option. i had them on my subaru STi and really liked them. i don't have a long history to compare them to, but i did really like them. also, at BMWCCA events, you see a LOT of Star Specs at the track. There are a lot of GOOD options out there but almost every tire has some compromises along with its stregths (high price, rapid wear, etc).

Good luck! Reading over this thread, I'm guessing you probably are even more confused on which to get because there are so many that come highly recommended

I love my Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics. As Orionredwing stated, they are very sticky and also great in the rain. They replaced the old GS D3s. I had 2 sets of GS D3s before the Assymetrics and they were fabulous too. Best combination I have found for superb dry handling, good rain handling and decent wear. Believe me, tires make a HUGE difference.

Sorry for the noobish question, but what do you guys do when you get a flat tire for those of you running non-RFT?

I just switched to Star Specs a week ago and I have a can of Fix-A-Flat in my trunk. Still need an air compressor, though.

Bought the M Mobility kit. Never used it tho. Depending on the situation I probably would just call roadside.

I just called a tow w/ my AAA membership. It was pretty straightforward, and at no time did I feel like I regret changing out of the RFTs. Actually, to be even more honest, I never even thought about RFTs throughout the whole ordeal (it never came to mind). Thats how little regret I have switching out of them.

Oh, it was also a 100 mile tow, so it wasn't a quick hop to the shop.

I will give a +1 to this review of the Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics. The wet traction is insane! I too have tracked my car in the rain and the instructor's couldn't believe the amount of grip I had in the wet. I also run with the advanced group who typically run R-comps. When they found out that I wasn't running R-comps, they couldn't believe it.
I will DEFINITELY replace these with the same tire. I will be getting new tires soon. They lasted 17K miles with 9 track days.
There's an $80 rebate from GY going on till the end of February too.

Oh, Nitto Invo's stink in the rain. My buddy who has a modded e92 M3 couldn't even come close to me in the wet. He said it was like he was driving on ice. They were pretty new, with less than 3K miles on them.

I have a '06 330 with the sport packages and I'm on my second set of RE760's. They are a great alternative to the RF's. The ride is just as good and they save $500-$600 over the RF's. I purchased the conti tire sealer kit for some onboard insurance but have not needed it yet.

Can't speak for the Falken, but the V12 EVO has been an outstanding value oriented performance tire. Great choice.

Looks like the The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 is coming out this year. Any details on what has changed?

I was looking at the rev1 of these for my 325i ZSP as I will need new summers after this season, but they didn't make the 255/40R17 for the rear.
