Exactly, If it's not too far and I know my car will be parked for a long time in a crappy lot? I just take the wifes car... No point in getting dinged and sweating it.

Most of the time though it's not too hard to find the "Right" parking spot in whatever lot you might be in. I also will tip the Valet's up front, a $20 can do wonders for the health of your car and paint.

It's a no win situation. I was living in Reno and parked in the back 40 of a Lowes lot, nothing anywhere close. While in the store, a storm blew in and rammed 2 of those VW sized shopping carts into the side of my car and caused $1,000 worth of damage. The only thing I gained by parking far away was a little more momentum with the carts. The next year I'm living in the midwest, and parked at another lowes. Same thing, storm blew in, cart hits car, crease in opposite door. Not quite as bad as the first one.

Now I go to Home Depot

We went with the 335i and I was not feeling comfortable. Halfway through dinner I had to check the car. It was fine, but guess what else was out there? S55 AMG, X5 brand-new, 545i, all jammed near other cars. Guess some people are in a position where it doesn't matter to them. Me, I guess the car is new so I'm extra careful. I'm running out of excuses to keep it in the garage 7-9 days at a time with the weather getting nicer....

No joke I took my car to Lowes last Sat. to use one of those $10 off on a $25purchase. I left my car exposed on both sides......you shoulda seen how fast I made my purchase, even did the self-checkout!

I always park as far out in BFE as possible to minimize the chance of rogue grocery carts hitting me or 1990 rusted out Ford Escorts parking inches away. My gf always gripes about having to walk. But, my persistance had (thus far) paid off -- not even a hint of a scratch. We come home last weekend and she walks out to get something out of the back seat of her Rx350 and HER door ends up dinging my driver's side. I don't care anymore. Don't get me wrong I did at first but not anymore. My car was rear-ended by a bus and since been fixed but it just doesn't have that 'new' feeling anymore. I'll park just about anywhere now as long as I'm not slamming the car into a parking spot with no space. I'm mindful of where I park but I don't go out of my way or park in the back of the lot or anything. So far it's worked out well the 3 months I've been doing it, no dings yet.

At work, I park on the end spot in the parking garage. No one's there when I get there so I can take my time and park in the perfect position.

Anywhere else I just chose a spot that has a couple open around it. I'm not gonna park way out, because there will be that funny guy who decides to park right next to me and maybe very close as well.

I think THE MOST ANNOYING parking issue are the people that INSIST on reversing into spots -- even if it means making 3+ people wait while they reverse, go fwd to straighten up, reverse, not quite straight yet, fwd, ahhh, finally, made it in JUUUUST right. THEY deserve to be keyed.

I hate parking far away, so I follow some simple guidelines to minimize my 'ding probability'.

Do's

• Park next to a more expensive car than yours
• Park next to another late-model European luxury vehicle
• Park next to another BMW
• Park close to the shopping cart corral - If shoppers are that close to your car, they will likely make the effort to put their cart in the corral

Don'ts

• Avoid parking to the right of a 2 door in places where people are usually not alone - restaurants, movies, mall, etc.
• Avoid parking next to dirty/crappy cars - the don't care about their car so don't expect them to be concerned about yours
• Don't park on the side of the car with a baby seat

I park pretty far out--where no one is around me--that usually works pretty well. However, if someone is having a bad day and your shiny BMW is there, then it might be bad news for you no matter what. Parking over lines and taking up two spots is just a recipe for disaster.

I've done most of the stuff you guys mentioned and over the years .....I've parked far away from the main lot, parked on the ends, stayed away from 2 door, shity and large vehicles, away from the cart collection area, and sometimes just opted to just stay in the vehicle and just let the wife do the shopping

over the last 6 years I had 2 minor dents on both of my vehicles both on the passenger side doors. Both occured on the first month of ownership and oh yeah besides the dent on my nissan they also keyed my driver side door

I always try to park as far away as possible. If that is not an option, I park next to a more expensive car or an end space next to the passenger's side of the car next to me.

I park courteous. I give room for others, and try to be a little further out than most others.

Having said that, occasionally I find someone went out of their way to park, well, it looks like simply to piss me off. They park awful close, even over the parking spot's line. Okay, that's fine. Live and let live.

HOWEVER: If I find that in doing so, they've damaged my car.....let's just say I make sure payback's a bitch.

This reminded me of something.

I used to work for a large company with a plant in Puerto Rico. My first trip there, I parked head-in as I normally would. The security guard sees me, & chews me a new one. There, everyone reverses into the spaces; not sure why really, but there it is.

- avoiding parking between two cars
- dont use car parks where the slots are too narrow
- try to park with your passenger side next to a pillar or curb
-dont take up two lots (no matter how tempting) because you will get keyed
