driving around an LCI loaner from the dealer with a heated wheel and it is definitely a plus now that temps are around zero in the morning. In my car I drive 30mins with heat on and my hands are still freezing from the wheel when I get to work. I have been using the heated wheel these past few days and it is really nice.

kudos to whoever figures this out.

I looked into this mod heavily a couple of years ago, and after much online research and a long talk with one of the mechanics at the local dealership, it seemed this mod was not possible (at the time), at least not with the pre-LCI E90 (not sure of any differences between E90/92s or pre and post LCI models since it is now an option).

i find this a little hard to believe, it seems like all you need is to
-buy a heated wheel, the clockspring and the plastic steering column surround that came with it, and the heated wheel button + wiring hardness

-replace steering wheel, clockspring, steering column plastic surround, insert button
-wire a spare 12v source from somewhere in the steering column or dash to power the extra clockspring ring or pin
-plug everything back in

am i missing something here? does the heated wheel tie into the climate control system through some complicated crap?

Your missing a relay and possibly more. That little button on the steering wheel does not handle the 40A that go to the heater.

Hey guys. This may or may not be of any use to you but I figured if I could add an option to your custom wheel undertaking then why not. 2 years ago I purchased a 2009 335i Xdrive coupe that came with the sport heated steering wheel. I really wanted an M3 wheel swap until I learned that it is not available with the heated option. I live in New Jersey and spend my winters in Vermont so getting rid of my heated wheel was not an option. After researching and gathering my data I chose to send my heated wheel in the mail to have it wrapped in alacantra with M stitching while still retaining my heat option. The company I used is COBYwheel (google search it) The turn around time was quick and the pricing was fair for such an OEM job. They can pretty much do anything in any fabric and color combo. (you may want to ask if they can add heat to a non heated wheel) It is now two years later and the wheel is in just as good shape as the day I got it back. The quality, craftsmanship, and service is top notch. The heat comes through the alacantra very well and on a cold winter morning nothing is better than turning on the heated wheel and seats to make my drive to work more pleasurable.

Did anyone ever get this working?

I agree that a heated wheel, clockspring and the proper 12V wiring is all it should take, but folks are right - that heated wheel button is not going to control the high amperage required for the heated wheel.

i've made such retrofit on my pre-lci e91
steering wheel heater do not require much amperage, about 10A

this is option can be installed from factory on lci cars
all parts needed are in previous posts
on pre-lci car I wired power from front charger socket connector, because I've removed ashtray and switched to non-smoker package
on lci car power connected to special pins on JBE,
the scheme of connections exist in ISTA/Rheingold BMW software

just so you know, you're probably the only person to successfully retrofit an lci heated wheel into a non-lci e9x

also just so you know; im actually willing to pay you monies for a detailed write up diy guide on that retrofit, with parts lists and cost estimations and wiring diagrams if necessary. pics probably are not possible at this point but basic drawn diagrams would be excellent.

also; does your retrofit tie into the stock system? using the column mounted button and stuff?

scheme is for lci car
in pre-lci car + and - taken from any ignition enabled feature
i've removed front ashtray with charger socket from central console trim and replaced it with storage tray, and used charger connector to power steering wheel heater
heating is available only when engine is started and automatically goes off when engine stops

woah hey wait a second, i thought the whole heated steering wheels system was tied into the climate control system, and required a different harness + a special control box?

for instance, in your installation, does the heated steering wheel automatically turn off once it gets up to temperature relative to the cabin? or does it just go to max heat and stay there until you disengage it
