I've spent a lot of time on avsforum. Seems to be a good source of info. What do you consider high-end? |

music is what speakers are designed for. it is far harder to make good music speakers than good sounding home theatre speakers. Dynaudio and Linn are the best speakers i have ever heard in my life. My good friend's father is the CFO of nextel and he has his entire house setup with linn speakers, two huge home theatres and the whole house audio as well... spent about $250,000 on the speakers alone.... but they are ridiculous. i have Definitive Audio in my house... they are very good for home theatre, they are a small company that doesnt advertise really so they are much cheaper than comparable name brand stuff. but really, in the end, home theatre speakers that aren't designed for music are crap.

I like Def Techs. The bipolar speakers are cool for home theater. I know DynAudio speakers are really nice. How would u compare it to B&W's high end speakers and Linn?
I know it is a lot harder to make nice music speakers vs HT speakers. Hell, even the cheaper speakers I've heard sound fine in most houses for just surround sound movies. So are speakers that are designed to be good at music therefore good at HT? |

And we can't forget about Von Schweikert, Goldmund, Leader, Acapella, etc. There are so many high end manufacturers.

Sound/Audio & Acoustical engineering is not an exact science. I have taken classes in the field and have done research with professionals and believe me, a lot is up to personal interpretation...one set of speakers may sound appealing to one person but not another...It also greatly depends on your use for the system...that being said it is very difficult to compare across the board when you get to high end audio equipment.

Bose is crap?
Bose is crap? OK, so they sell their speakers at Circuit City these days, but a wide array of products does not mean all their products are the best. They make very good car audio systems. Comparing older Bose systems against the brand new Logic 7 is a little unfair. We'll see what Bose responds with.
Yes, their speaker quality is no longer what it was in the 80s. I have a pair of 301s I bought in the 80s and they still work fine, despite the incredible abuse I put them through in college - one actually shook itself off the shelf during a party. But their new speakers aren't poor quality for the price. And for car speakers, they're just fine. My current car system is Bose. I am looking forward to the Logic 7, but I can't say it sounds too much better than the Bose system I bought 7 years ago. Bose has gone beyond making good speakers into all sorts of interesting sound technology. The Wave radio is pretty impressive for the size, albeit expensive for a clock radio - but if you want an undercounter or bathroom radio/CD it can't be beat. Bose makes the absolute best noise reducing headphones available. If you don't have QC2s or QC3s, and you fly, you really don't know what you're missing. They also make the only really good simulated surround sound systems out there - you can spend a lot more money and not find anyting better. If you want real crap try Sony. Their equipment truly defines overpriced crap. I traded my harman/kardon receiver for a Sony surround sound receiver with a bunch of bells and whistles and a remote. I miss that h/k every time I turn on this crappy Sony. I would trade it for the Bose system in a heartbeat. |
