It's a very common problem. Pixels disappear when hot. Mine was replaced under warranty. But no, CPO will NOT cover that.

Realoem lists the HU at $717. But if you don't have L7, then I suggest you simply replace HU with aftermarket ones. You can get a much higher quality HU for that price.

My stock is still up for grabs for whoever wants it. Its Hifi and never had a problem with it.

You can most likely get the HU recoded for L7.

Hey, extended warranty does cover radio and nav if you get the right package.

Getbmwparts.com has the HU for $301.

What aftermarket HUs do you recommend?

Wouldn't you lose the telephone, iPod integration and other features if you switch to an aftermarket head unit? Are there aftermarket HUs out there that can integrate the BMW features into it?

iPod integration sucks on the BMW HU, it's much better on Alpine systems, for example. The telephone is probably the biggest worry...

definitely weather related. When I took the car out of the garage in the morning, it was fine. Then as the morning went on, the pixels started to disappear. The temperature was in the mid-high 80s. When I put the car back in the garage and left it for a few hours, the pixels started to return.

It's way cheaper than buying a new head unit, and better than buying a used one because the same thing might happen. The german audio tech repair also comes with a warranty, it's really a good deal. Couldn't be happier!

Why not just pay the extra $100 and get a new one from getbmwparts?

$199 repair is a better option I think. Plus you get a warranty.

How long did it take to get your radio back? Fedex showed them getting it last Thursday and I requested the expedited payment.

How do you remove head unit, is there a DIY?

It was a little more than a week for me. I didn't request the expedited shipping though. I mailed it out on 7/11 and it was returned to me on 7/19 or 7/20, I don't remember exactly. They did give me a tracking number once they shipped it however.

This is the best DIY on here:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9390

Though my car has the automatic climate control vs. the DIY's manual control. If you read the following posts on the DIY you'll find that the automatic AC controls are more stubborn to take out. It's not difficult per se, but I was nervous I was going to break something. The best way I found was to take a credit card (or similar) and gently work the top corners of the AC control module out. Once the top edge is exposed, I found the best thing to do is push directly down from the top edge with something like a butter knife. It then should pop out fairly easily. Once the AC controls are out, the radio is held in by just two screws, the antenna, and a big chunky connector.

When the head unit is removed, is the vehicle still operable. I would assume so, but with BMW you never know. I would have assumed that a major manufacturer of vehicles would have figured out how to make an LCD display that was durable enough to function in a hot environment( the passenger cabin of a car)

Yeah the car is completely usable without the radio. I drove it around for a week like that. (makes driving really boring really quickly, also found a new rattle because of the silence...) The BMW Assist/Bluetooth and associated telephony was the only error that shows up on the dash (yellow "SOS" telephone with slash through it) which is to be expected with the lack of the head unit.

It's pretty pathetic that it fails in the first place, I agree.

So, you used the eBay service to repair, reinstalled the unit the sent you, and it all works. No registering of the head unit required? Did they send you back your head unit, or was it a rebuild of someone else's? I'm asking because I was told that radio replacement required recoding.

Gotcha, I didn't hear back from him until Tuesday night because he was on vacation, new displays were backordered and should be in on 8/10, another week without a radio....
