I'm of the view that a manual car will always be more fun/engaging than an auto, even with the advent of the paddle shifters. But that's a personal thing.
Ultimately, I think priorities dictate what transmission you ultimately go with (i.e. when your hunny tells you to ditch your 6-speed for an auto tranny so she can drive it too!) |

For me:
335 cab: MT- love it, the 6MT is super slick, summer car, less traffic, more cruising fun 335xi sedan: AT- love it, the AT is super smooth and responsive, winter car, big clunky winter boots etc, lots of snow and ice, city traffic, figured the AT would be better, so far no regrets.

i had an auto e90 328 and now a manual e92 m3....
i like both. the auto is awesome in traffic. i can listen to the radio and not have to use much of my brain to keep up with heavy traffic. manual is more fun on the open road.

Manual FTW , MT can make any car fun especially if u have a high hp car then its a lot of fun. On the other end AT can make the most exciting machine in the world boring. People who choose at over MT always use traffic as an excuse but it really ain't that bad. Especially in the E90 the clutch is so light it really isn't a lot of work.

Once you are used to driving a manual you won't have to think about operating the clutch and changing gear in any kind of traffic - heavy of light - it will come naturally just like walking and breathing.
I totally agree with Mikewarlover that automatic CAN make the most exciting machine in the world boring. This is particularly true if the engine wants to be revved high. Paddle shift, DCT, etc., help but without the ability to let the car cruise in neutral in between gears when you want to does take some of the fun away.
