buy the plate for yourself and so it has meaning to you. Who cares if nobody else knows its just your initials.

I'd rather have a plate with my initials than one where you need to squint, stand on your head and add fake screws just so it looks like the semblance of a name/word. That is almost as bad as clownage

I bought 4 plates for us and the kids based on the current GB plate scheme. £250 each.
Two of them will be on retention for some years yet!

Looks interesting when we park beside each other, only the first two letters differ.

It's a personal thing really...

What happens when car has to be sold? Is it easy to keep the plate?

It's pretty straight forward and costs £80 to transfer.

The wife and I both have 5 digit prefix plates with the last 3 letters being our initials. They don't mean anything to anyone else but we like them and I think they look neater on the car than the standard 7 digit plates.

Sorry to be negative
But in my opinion personal plates are a complete waste of money
I just do not understand why you would want your initials on your car?

Also if you do spend much cash and get something (tw4t) memorable.
All to easy for people to look up your details for what ever purpose.

Much better to spend that cash on new alloys if you want to personalise your car.

Each to their own tho, good luck OP

Hmm I have a single number and then my initials... it's something I always wanted as a kid, and finally got it, and it holds massive sentimental value.

Problem is though, my initials stand out quite a lot, so everyone knows who it is/where you've been/what you're doing... can sometimes cause issues

I love mine. Bought it from a DVLA auction nearly ten years ago.
Cost me over £2k but then so did the stereo in my first car nearly 20 years ago, so I think it's been a pretty good investment in terms of retaining value versus other mods - the trader I managed to outbid said he would have retailed it for 5k, so I'm happy paying what I paid.

I bought mine for me, not to show off or whatever. It doesn't mean anything to anyone else. When I get a new car and the plate get transferred I always smile when I see it for the first time; at that point the car is mine and it's the finishing touch. Wouldn't be without it.

No more easy to find details of a private plate than a normal plate, surely?

I now drive a Mercedes. Before that was a BMW. Before that was a spell in an MX5. Before that was another Mercedes. Before that was a BMW. Before that was a Subaru and before that a Golf. What set of wheels could I buy and transfer across all those cars, like my plate has been?

In the line previous to that quoted I ment if you spend alot of cash.
2k per set of top wheels
vs 10k on a plate?

That was what I was getting at.

Not something I would value as much.

I've had my pnp transfered across my previous three cars (B6WWW). Thought it might look a bit twatish on a BMW but it actually doesn't look too bad (I hope).

I have a personal plate, depending on what you get they can be a good investment. My bro has just today accepted an offer on his number plate (as he stopped using and has held it on retention for last few years), for £20k he bought it for £4.5k about 10 years ago. There is however capital gains tax to pay....

I've just bought VJ11 MMY as my mates call me Jimmy. I was looking at a new car but I wouldn't be able to put my plate on it. Think I'll wait till I can afford a 2011 M3

My wife bought me a private plate for my birthday 2 years ago, her first name is starts with A, my initial is G, and my surname is only 2 letter long, so for £245 pretty my entire name is on the plate...I'm so use to it been on my old car that the 335i didn't feel like mine until I got the plate transferred across

Only bother I ever had was that when I wrote my car off and the insurance company bought me a new one (car was less than 1yr old) I had no end of bother when I finally sold the new car. Problem was an HPI showed me as writing off a blue cooper s on said private plate, and I was selling a blue cooper s on that plate. HPI did eventually advise the purchaser the details were different (engine/chassis numbers) and the guy believed the truth, but I lost two sales.
If you change cars often it gets annoying paying £80 and having to queue in your local DVLA centre (small annoyance but hey ho)

I eventually left it on a car, didn't miss it for a while, but would love it back now

Previously to my BMW, I owned a couple of Audi TT's and acquired the plate B1TTC. Rightly or wrongly this was a play on BITCH incorporating the TTC (Coupe) letters. This has now transitioned to the BMW.
