I am so glad this thread was posted.
I just got a CPO 328i as well. It's also doing low MPG, 21-23mpg for the first couple of tanks I got with about 80% city driving as OP. This got just under 50k miles as well. Just as the OP, I do have exhaust residue, more or so than other cars, which I am not very happy about (I will post pics soon as well). I, for a fact, know that this car should get around 25mpg regular city in Florida. No hills, good, straight roads. 28-31 Should be highway gas mileage. So I don't know those of who gets less than 20, there's def. something wrong with the way you drive, even if your hard on it. I am a little worried about this situation as well, but I've been told, down here, always use Mobil or Chevron 93 Octane gas. Shell seems to have higher ethanol concentration comparatively? This is what I've been told by few people. And, I have been using Shell 93 all this time. I talked to the dealership regarding this and since they have a complete record of my car, it has a perfect history (recent oil change, wheel balance, alignment, etc with new tires. However, they suspect that the previous owner might have put low quality gas in it from the symptoms I am explaining to them. So they asked me to try the fuel addictive that BMW sells. They also pulled the line that says that this is summer and it's lower than usual, but it should not matter THAT much. So I am going to try the fuel additive, Mobil or Chevron 93 Gas. Also, I guess the car will learn my driving style and all that.... since mine is an auto. I will report in few weeks and let you guys know. Meanwhile, crossing my fingers ![]() |

Ok, It's been awhile, and to update:
Tried few things, yet no mentionable improvement. - I tried BMW additive, about 3 tanks. No improvement. - Put a K&N, throttle lag is now minimum, probably improved the mpg by .5; not enough. - Been using Chevron and Mobil 92 oct. My city mpg is 18-20. This is fairly in stop and go traffic, yet more than 50% smooth, straight roads without and stops. However, I noticed this: I have stock 16" alloys. They have nitrogen filled in them, yet my Speedometer is off. Since the diameter of these are smaller, when I do 60 mph, I am actually doing about 55-56 according to several GPS's. So the wheels are turning more than due to smaller diameter. So could this also offset my mpg? May be the car is ACTUALLY doing 22-24mpg, but since the speedometer is off, it's calculating wrong? Anyone here has 16"s and gets mid 20's for city? |

Got new plugs few weeks ago. Now I get 22-24 with 80% city driving. Though some might call this normal, I still feel that this needs to be better.
I am trying BMW additive 2-3 times per oil change. Should I try the dealer injector cleaner service? Throttle body clean up? What else can I try? |

Going easy on the throttle and cut down on any idling. Go to Fuelly.com and look at the tips on there if you need to get better economy.
These cars don't do that well in the city unless you're really easy on the throttle. I mean with just the car alone you are pushing around 3400 pounds roughly. |

Bought my 328i 3 months ago, previous owner had 41mpg, don't know his driving methods, wish I did. With stock everything 25mpg 90% highway 65mph cruise, 10% doing errands, I would get 420-430mpg on Chevron 91oct. At start up one time, I had 503mpg on one full tank.
Installed eisenmann full exhaust and k&n cone intake last week, 400-410mpg, 24.7mpg, still driving 90% highway 65mph cruise. 10% doing errands and DS mode and semi-manual at stop light roads. I know I can do better mileage if my foot wasn't tempted to hear my expensive investment on sound. Future hopeful to improve gas: lowered suspension, wrapping exhaust headers with exhaust wrap, BMW PI or eurobox, AA tune. |

If the car is not getting at least the posted mpg with my driving, I know there is something else going on with it. That's what I am trying to find out. If you are getting 15mpg..why not drive a V8? why not get way more power? I know what your answer will be, but I was just going along with the same mentality as your question...in a way a good question... |

Are you an xi? I mean that would be an issue for getting good mileage as well. I just think these cars are heavy. I can tell you right now that if you're in an area where you are using air conditioning in these cars it kills mileage worse than other cars I have driven. I do have to say though how long is it going to take you to pay yourself back with all the money you have put into it? |

I have an XI and a heavy foot. I get about 17 mpg in the city. I get about 25 mpg on the highway, but that could be better if I could keep it under 80.

I had a loaner 328i for few days now. Same exact trim as my own. This is a 2011 with under 10K miles. I do the same weekly routine, this thing does 2-3mpg higher in city, 1-2mpg better on highway. I wonder if LCI remapped the computer....

Low 20's for city traffic is not unusual. I used to get around 24mpg in and around Houston regardless of outside temperature or 87, 89, or 91 octane numbers. Fuel additives also didn't seem to help.
On highway trips, the car does much better. When sticking to the speed limit of 75mph, 31.5mpg is doable. And since the fuel consumption is a function of the square of the velocity... |
