Hey CT, where?

To the OP, don't worry it is only the law to have new cars with DRLs. ONce you buy it, you can do whatever you want so long as you comply with the provincial laws regarding when lights are needed at dawn and dusk.

Yeah...too bad the place here in Vancouver doesn't charge that low...

Oh well..in the grand scheme of things it's only $20 bucks more...and all things said...a relatively cheap mod for BMWs.

BTW...thanks again to ctgazer for helping me out on this...he was the first person who mentioned that a DRL mod through software was even possible!

DRL for 335 sedan

hey guys,

I've been trying to do a search on the DRL with regards to a particular question but no far no luck. Can anybody help me out with this? What I want to know is:

I know that the 2007 335i coupe uses the angel eyes for DRL. What about the sedan? I get confused because the sedan is always referred to as the "E90" but I find that on e90post.com, it usually refers to 325's or 330's. Also, because DRL's are mandatory here in Canada, it complicates the matter.

So if I want to get a new 335 sedan in Canada, will it use the angel eyes as its DRL?

On my old car I had my DRL disabled and I'd never gotten bothered once about it. I'm sure you'll be fine!

BTW, what's the punishment for not having DRL?

E92 (coupe) uses angel eyes as DRL.
E90 (sedan) uses seperate halogen bulbs as DRL. The angel eyes only come on when turn on the parking lights or if you turn on full head lights (xenon). they do not come on as DRL.

i'm interested for sure! but i was also thinking of just pulling the plug on the hallogen bulb and putting a resistor in the socket to 'trick' the car to think the bulb is still in.
any chance your shop has a friend in calgary that can do this?

Is there some type of a DRL module by anychance? There are a few cars I know of where all you hafta do is "pull the plug" and you're done.

Yeah that seems common on some domestic cars. So far, I haven't read of one on the BMW.

Two disadvantages of just "pulling the plug".

1) Error code. (of course you are going to bypass this by soldering some resistors in place...seems too much work for me since I couldn't solder to save my life)
2) you lose the "Flash to pass" ability when you take out the halogen bulb. I don't use it very often...but sometimes it's a nice safety thing to have...

Ok I talked to the shop. If we can get 4 people or more together, then the shop will do it for $40. They are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm.

They say even if you service your car and the dealership reflashes your ECU, your DRL should remain disabled. The DRL will only go back on if you have the lamp control module or the ignition switch replaced.

Please add your name to the list. If we do not have at least 4 people then...the regular price is $60.

Dave-

I never even knew this thread existed! Yet, just last week I saw an E92 with angel's only coming at me - I was intreagued. I have one question that's gonna determine whether I put my name down on yer list;

Can I still use my halogens for flashing slow people in front of me? Or, are these things effectively turned off for good (or until reset)? If I still have functionality and angels only as drl's... then I might be interested.

OT- when are we gonna have the summer meet? YVR-4

So can the dealer do this? Let's say you have a friend at the dealer, do they have this capability? And if not, Space, what kind of shop is that so I can call around here to see about having it done. Thanks...God, if this works i will be posting this in the "what's your fav mod" thread

What about (attention-ghetto comment comming) duct or electrical taping the bulb itself so you don't get any error msgs? Duct tape would probably keep the color somewhat silver so you can really see it in the daytime in the assembly....

you can still use your halogens for flashing people in front of you. they just disable the option for the drl's. and on e90's they are turned off until you turn them back on, through the same way...the angels wont be your DRL's. you will NOT have ANY drl's. in order to run just the angels, you have to switch your lights over to the parking lights option (1-click to the right).

the dealer can do this for sure. the dealer can pretty much program you car to any spec. provided they have the appropriate software. whether or not they will do it, for legal reasons is another story. for example, in europe you can have the windows roll back up through the remote but only roll down in NA. another is the tv option in idrive. its available in australia and europe but not NA.

im lost....where do you want to stick the duck tape? when people are pulling the plug, they are disconnecting the circuit so the car reads it as a burnt bulb or something similar. how would duct tape solve this issue?

no, duct tape over the bulb (still plugged in) So it will be on, just not visible, hence the angel eyes being the only visible light
