I'm hoping the job doesn't involve taking the dash out. I got a message saying I should get the car back tomorrow but no detail yet as to what the noise actually is/was.

My dealer informed me that via a process of elimination they'd tracked the noise down to something behind the air/heating vent on the drivers side of the dash. By removing and replacing parts they'd identified the issue and eliminated the noise. After roadtesting everything was OK. So I drove out of the dealer (with new clutch, see a.n.other thread) and the noise reappeared within a couple of minutes. Probably less. Not too happy.

I'm also a little peeved about the vehicle info settings being reset so I have no historical fuel consumption figures. I'm also surprised that they could have listened for the noise because when I first started the car music blasted out from the stereo.

They're ringing tomorrow to see how everything is but I'm in two minds about taking this further. Can I can be bothered anymore? Am I just being picky?

It's all sounding depressing familiar. 13 times my car went back and they never fixed it.

I called back in today and one of their guys popped the vent out for me so I could have a play myself. Still can't track it down.

I may well give up and just grind my teeth for the next three and a half years. At least it drives better now the clutch judder has gone.

Have you tried pressing the A Pillar cover towards the windscreen (gently as it as a airbag behind) to replicate the noise? It sounds like a very familiar noise I had with my previous 1 Series.

Thankfully, my E92 doesn't have it *touch wood*

I'm fairly sure I have but I'll give it a go. I've pressed, pulled, slapped and shifted virtually everything else so it can't hurt.

Hi there Rich, I think I may have exactly the same issue as you with the spot weld on 330d m sport touring 08 plate. I live in Sheff too. How have you gone on with this?

Cheers

so that's at least 5 people that I know of who have had this problem and BMW still cant seem to come up with a reliable fix. Maybe we need to Tweet it or mention it on our Facebook pages ;-)

I'm still trying to track it down. Feel free to get in touch if you want to compare noises.

Another update.

I've had the A pillar trim off, I've had the air vent out, I've tightened every screw and bolt I can get to, I've pushed bits of rubber or old fuel cards inbetween every gap I can find, I've pushed, pulled and smacked every bit of dashboard trim.

The noise is still there.

They are going to have to redo the spot welds and even then there is no guarantee that it will work.

I think I'm going to give up. I've just filled in the BMW satisfaction questionaire and they have got back to me in the past when I've had an issue. If they do this time and the problem is escalated then fair enough.

Fixed it! Well, sort of. With one of these...

I took off the A pillar trim and wedged it in the corner between the dash and the screen. Drove around a bit and no noise. So then I wondered what to use as a permanent item, couldn't think of anything so just put the trim back on

After speaking to dompb it appears this is where the noise came from on his and when the dealer took the dash out it was one of the attachments for the dash to the body that had worked loose/broken. His car is sorted now but I'm not keen on having the dash out at the moment. I'll get round to it eventually I suppose. For the moment my office door stopper works well!

Now I just need something to keep my office door open.

I've since modded the mod and cut about half an inch off the thickest end of the wedge because the A pillar trim sat a little proud.

All in all I'd say the whole thing has got to be worth 10 brake at least.

Well I thought I'd revive this one.

After driving round since last year with door wedges stuck behind the dashboard and windscreen and becoming an expert at removing A pillar trim, adjusting door wedge, reattaching A pillar trim I took my car in for it's first service. The service was a minor thing, my priority was getting this damn noise sorted.

So Sytner Sheffield (who I have no real complaints with) had the car for three days and serviced the car, sorted out some other issues, forgot about the dodgy handbrake and removed the dashboard. They appear to have packed everything in felt tape, thoroughly road tested the car and... the noise is still there!!!

I'm just venting really and I know the car is leased but I do not expect problems like this on a £36k car. I'll be completely honest and say that if I'd bought this vehicle I'd be wanting to sell it. That's how annoyed I am. To others this may seem like a minor issue but it's all I can think of every time I get in the damn thing. I'm really trying to love this motor, when it's quiet it's quite obviously a superior vehicle but when it's creaking and cracking over ever bump in the road I'd happily set fire to it.

I'm at my wit's end and have no idea where to go from here. Frankly I'm embarrased about walking back into Sytner yet again with 'a noise' but I'm afraid I'm going to have to.

As I said before, I think there is a strong chance that you have spot welds on the bulkhead that have failed.

It has happened to quite a few people including myself.

Mine was repaired a few months ago and has been fine since. Not exactly a simple job though.
