So the money he saved in parts he spent on fitting and labour? Brand new parts is still the best option in my book!
![]() He's saying that labor was under 500; So I understand that its 500 + the parts? 500 in labour is a steal indeed; but not in a good way! This shouldnt take a mechanic more then 3 hours. If he charges more either he is incompetent, dont know what he's doing or obviously lying. I dont know why so much people pay to do this. Take your time and its very DIY-able. If I did it, everybody could. I'm not a mechanical guy at all but if you can distinguish nuts and bolts, you should be ok. But you have to get the good parts in the first place for sure.

He might have gotten an early e60 production car which isn't the same manifold as the 330 one. I believe you have the get a manifold after 2006 I believe. I have attached some pics of the 530 (02/2006 Production). The manifold has been cleaned up now and I removed the oil seperator. Last edited by DESI4life10; 11-18-2011 at 08:31 AM.. |

Desi, supposedly, the 530i manifold I got also came out of a '06 car (at least that's what they told me). nearly exactly the same except there was one vent port (centered on the bottom part) instead of two. Luckily, it came with everything, including the oil separator, so it could still be used on a 325i without issue, since the 325i also has an oil separator.
Another member here successfully put that 530i manifold on his 325i. |

I just had the manifold done a week or two ago. Found a 3-stage at Hi-way Auto Parts in Texas from a low-mileage wrecked '09 Z4 3.0 SI for $350. It came with all the adjusters and hoses. Ended up returning the $90 vent hose to the dealer. Installation was just over $400 at Gunbarrel Import Motors. The tech, JW, did a great job.
There are definitely some jumpy spots in the power band, and I hope the AA tune or possibly Autologic p-tune can remedy/improve this. BMW should have included the 3-stage manifold from the factory. The stock power output of the N52 in the E91 is not very pleasing at 5000+ ft altitude.

What is the vent hose for? I only had one and it was too short so I capped the vent hole off. What is it supposed to do? 15k miles and no problems though.

50 years ago these systems were vented into the air, but with todays environmental standards they are routed back into the engine, like a PCV valve or similar to a smog pump. I highly recommend you get the correct hose and get it installed pretty quickly. Last edited by Johnny D; 02-21-2012 at 12:55 AM.. |

I'm confused now because I remember I had to make one hose longer which I'm assuming is the vent hose. There was a hole where there was nothing left that would go there. So I capped it off, its the farthest one if you look at it from the front of the car. Maybe it was a hose that split which I was to put on instead?

Gunner and Spacemonkey, this thread is about the 328i, so if you hear them talking about different vent hoses it is because they are different between the 325i and 328i.
For our cars, it will be hooked up like this... ![]() Both #3 and #4 have connectors that connect into the back of the manifold. There is also a third connector from the oil separator that connects to this area on the manifold. 01 OIL SEPARATOR 11617531423 02 Vent hose 11617559530 Connects to the back side of the manifold. Some models there is a split and two connection point. You can go to the dealership and find the dual connection version. 03 Connecting line 11157522931 Connects to the top rear of valve cover/head. Used to vent the valve train area. 04 Return pipe 11157567801 Connects to the crank case 05 Covering cap 11617547229 06 Bracket 11617532979 07 Tubing support 611313793518 08 Screw 11617535849 09 Extraction line 11157537701 connects from top of oil separator to throttle body intake. 10 Bracket 11157545772 |
