Nice upgrade man! I'd like to make the switch someday! Hopefully on the new f/i platform though.

I just got a fuel pump plausability code... again... plus an Injector 6 malfunction followed by a temporary check engine message and loss of power. I have had the most recent recall performed and I am on the new pump. They have a 2008 M6 for sale at the dealership RIGHT NOW and I think I am going to buy it. I am just tired of the HPFP problems on this car, I don't know... plus the delayed shifts.

Good luck with your M3

I am considering the same move.....

In order to get my 335i to the stage I need it to be, I have to do the following:

Oil coolers - 1500
wider rims/tires - 4000 rims, 2000 tires
brakes - 2000

this is almost $10k... I'll never get this back and the mods I put in on the 335..... this is why I am considering the M3 as well.

I am sure you are going to miss the daily drive 400+ ft-lbs of torque at 3000rpm... but you will offset this with an unbelievable rush of power PAST redline and all of the suspension, brakes and handling out of the box.

Don't even consider the fact that you won't mod the new car, I give you a month....

Great move, looking forward to hearing the review and I may PM you.

Wake me up when you will get 11.x 1/4 mile with a non-turbo/non-supercharged (mods which cost 10k+) M3. With a 335i, you can achieve that with $2000 in mods. And you can still have a decent track car with another $3000 in suspension.

I'll have close to 20k in mods now. Plus another 10k if I go the full route I need to go... this is still less than a M3.

I was just in for an alignment at the dealer. They had a 2011 M3 comp package used with 9k kms on it... they wanted 85k for it USED.... (Canadian)

They were going to give me $21k for my car with (100k kms on it) .... so out the door was going to be $70k for a trade on a M3. That is a pile of cash.

I just don't know how much more I should throw into this car now - jdemetry, this was your thinking too I bet - or was it just that you wanted/needed a 4 door? and always wanted the M3 I bet too.

Tell us what you were thinking/justification for the swap please.

I really need a four door now that I have three kids, and I wanted to buy new, an d the sedan stopped production last month. I've owned several BMWs, including 2 M cars. This will be my third. They are really special to me.

DA, you and I seem to have pretty similar taste. I would be way better off if I had bought the M right away as the resale is way better than mods that add no value in resale. I've always wanted to heavily mod a car and the 335 is a great platform. I've learned a lot about myself with this car, and I know the M is the car for me. I don't street or drag race, so I don't car about a one second diff in the 1/4 mile. No question the M is more money, but its an M .

FWIW, I paid $60k for the M3, brand new, with the competition package. Its pretty stripped down, doesn't even have a sun roof or heated seats. The latter is a bummer since I live in WI.

Changed this a bit.

6MT to 6MT, the M3 has 20% shorter gearing throughout. That equates to increased relative torue.

Flip that 6 over in the torque number.

It is 295 lb/ft at 3900 with the vast majority of that all over the rev band. One thing you will notice is that it isn't as bad as some would beleive. Due to the great throttle response, the vehicle moves when you want it. No, it does not have the torque hit you get with a turbo. But it is somewhat offset with responsiveness. In traffic, I have come to prefer the S65 as it is more precise in power delivery.

I think that an M3 while a fantastic car is an improper upgrade for most 335i owners. I love the sound, suspension and screaming red line but that just isn't enough all things considered for someone who almost always drives their car on the streets. A GTR is a better upgrade and for the price of a new M3 can be had with less than 30K miles. No reason not to get one unless you really need 4 doors.

From my experience; the M3 TQ was a disappointment. The high HP made up for it but that isn't necessarily the answer for someone who drives it on the streets. The M5/M6 on the other hand...

I'll miss the N54 and this community. My 335i was reasonably modded, and a big driver of the change is that I have three kids now, so I needed a sedan (5 seats). I don't care how comfortable they are, thats what my wife's car is for, but I need them to fit in a pinch.

I'll post my comparison once I'm through the break in period on the M3, probably on the M3 site, but maybe I'll post in both.
This.

Coming from a Honda/Acura owner, I lol'd at the lack of torque comments. Enjoy that NA beast!
