225 will fit on the rear just fine. It will be slightly stretched but not all that noticeable.

Funny weather in the East Coast lately. I'm worried that this winter's gonna hit hard. So I just put on my winters last week while it's still nice out... 225/50/17 Dunlop Winter Sport 3D on 17x7.5 @ all four, slight rubbage rarely, smooth ride.

Anyone stay with their wheels in the winter? I don't daily my car so I don't see a point in changing rims and tires, but if I did I still think I wouldn't go all out every time winter came.

Winter tires aren't for just for snow. It's for weather that 40 degrees and cooler. I wouldn't roll on summer tires without being very careful once those temps hit, and they will. My car is new to me, and my wheels I think will arrive on Thursday, I'll get my tires mounted (left over from my previous Audi) and probably will switch over this weekend.

@Alex - I saw the interior teaser pics, I think painting it was a good idea.

I want to get a beater car but I don't have space for it.

Yes exactly, the temperature is very important. Summer tires essentially turn into hockey pucks in the cold, it's dangerous to drive on them. Performance RFTs are even worse in the cold.

I took delivery of my car this March, naturally it had the performance RFT Bridgestones ... figured I would be OK but that was a mistake. I ended up not driving for days at a time the first 2-3 weeks I had it because of the cold. Next time I order a car it will be for delivery in ~May.

Put 225/40R/18 Blizzak LM-60s on my 189s (gonna buy something else next summer and use these as wheels, anyone need some PS2s?)...

... and then crashed my car the next day. I'll be ready for winter when it's back from MAC.

@ Alex, e30's are the shit! It's sad that so many young members show little to no respect for older BMW's.... yea i'm selling my winter wheel/tires on my e92 and storing the 335 and have been driving the e30 daily.

Well said.

I thought a square setup performs better than staggered in the snow?

Yes - with equal size tires, the front plow the way for the rear. With a staggered, the front and the rear have to plow paths ... more work for the car e.g. greater chance of not being able to move.

Skinny tires perform better in snow. You don't want to go staggered or wide. This was confirm with alot of research and spoke to a tirerack rep. I will be running BLIZZAK ws70 215/45/17 all around. My car is a rear wheel drive. I drove through unplowed blocks last year with BLIZZAK lm25. Drove through on a roll. Not a stop and go. I know I would of gotten stuck if I stopped. But didnt loose any tracking on a roll

Already put on the 189 winters and purchased a new set of Conti ExtremeContact DWS for them. Not going to crank up the coils though...not sure where the tool is anyways. If anything, I would crank up the rears because they are nicely tucked right now.

This is true. I had the stock square 17s w/ the stock RFTs and I killed it in the snow. This year, I picked up staggered 189s but put some new Conti Extreme DWS on so hopefully they will perform well.

this, and skinnier (<235) tires are better.
