For another thing, engine builders who build engines for racing change oil right after break-in (after <100 miles in some cases.) They aren't interested in getting 300,000 miles out of the engine, but the absolute best performance. I grant you that it's obnoxious and obsessive, but it's also cheap insurance. And if we weren't obsessed, how many of us would be here?

As I said before, to think that BMW would decide to throw away their hard-earned reputation for building long-lasting cars and engines to save on oil changes in the US is ludicrous. Remember that BMW does not offer free maintenance all over the world, yet they still have the same recommended oil changing intervals.

I'd say 90% off everyone who changes the oil on their BMW's every 5-7k miles does so because #1 They like to work on their cars, #2 Makes them feel better, #3 Don't believe BMW since BMW only moved to 15k mile intervals and "lifetime fluids" when they started offering free scheduled maintenance. BMW knows most people, regardless of their current intentions, will not keep the car beyond 100k miles. |

I dont plan on keeping the car for over 100k, so I wont be wasting any more money. I'm hoping that the damage done during the first 15 wont be lethal to the engine. As I am sure BMW has tested this.
