The software I think you download from BT website themselves once you have the cable - not to sure if it comes with the disc
Cheers mate.

mistryn, I guess 3VIN or unlimited will be best. As once you are in this bussiness, most of your beamer friend may like to use your equipment.

Seems like a competitive price, I ended up paying more when I got mine at end 2009 directly from the US

For everyone's info, there's really two sets of 'OBD' data:

The first set one is the 'public' one, every OBD reader can read it, and BMW determines what you can see / do with it. It is not the zillions bits of data being quoted on some sites. I have such OBD reader, it suits me for what I use it, but there is not much on it, and for example it never ever saw a fault because BMW chose not to put that on the public OBD

And then there is the 'proprietary' one the BMW service tool uses. I believe BMW sells licenses to third parties, like BT, to use part of that. That's why you pay quite a bit more for tool which has the proprietary bit included. And that's why an 'unlimited' BT cable cost more then the '3-vin' only.

My BT tool sees multiple 'faults' every time, I can reset them, there's much more data etc. If you go onto the website of my OBD reader, auteraweb.com, you see they sell the proprietary access as additional software (but not for BMW).

But both serve different purposes. My OBD reader is to easily read data & be aware of DPF regens, and is in fixed location in the car. My BT is to know what's eventually wrong with my car, and be able to address what I can myself, but requires a notebook/laptop

cheers,

OP which cable/package did you get in the end? Have you had much luck with it? Any advice/recommendations you can offer?

I have a similar issue with airbag warning light and would rather get myself a cable so I can do it myself.

Thanks mate

I went for a cable and software off ebay but having a problem at the moment so I wont link the add just yet. I got the cable and software but having difficulties in loading the software on my laptop - it just doesnt seemt to load and whne it does the full diagnotic software doesnt work when connected to the car. I am in contact with the seller at the moment and he is sending me another piece of software and if that works out I will foward his details onto you

Two things here.
1- Make sure your OBD port is same in the computer which is in the file.
2- Make sure you run INPALOAD file and not INPA only file.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

Thanks for the update. Out of curiosity what made you NOT go for the BT tool? From the reading I've done so far it would seem that the BT one is the most reliable and most user friendly one?

makkan-any comments?

Mate, if I am being honest, user friendly things do not suit me, as I do not see any challenge in them.

Dont get me wrong, BT is best device so far, easy and user friendly. If you are not geek, and not very good with computers and virtual machines, go for BT.

However if you are above average computer champion, by all means try this cable / software and save some money for other modifications.
