You cannot compare replica wheels to authentic, forged wheels. Period.

They may look similar, but quality wise, there is absolutely no comparison. Replica wheels work for many people because of their limited budget, but to say that one choice is not necessarily better than the other is absurd.

You can look around online and find out any wheel can crack or bend. i have seen weds sports rims crack and they are made by rays. volks, bbs, you name it. under the right condition any rim will crack/break/bend

As long as you buy reps from manufactures who do some safety test you shouldn't have issues.

i have had rotas on my other car for 2 years, and other replica wheels before them. I have never once cracked or bent a rim. but then again i don't dive head first into pot holes.


If i could afford it, i would buy legit wheels. But living in the city i face a bunch of issues. Theft and damage my biggest 2. Cracking a $800 rim vs cracking a $200 rim. or having a $3500 set stolen vs a $1000 set

What's your point? Yes, any wheel can bend/crack, but cheap wheels will bend/crack much, much easier.

Agreed. For example, Apex makes really nice, lightweight wheels for a good price.

FWIW, I don't mind replica wheels. My problem is when people try to compare them to authentic wheels. There is no comparison, plain and simple. Price keeps most people away from authentic wheels, but that's a different story.

My opinion is if you are going to buy "real" wheels then there better be a reason they are better than OEM wheels. Many "real" wheels are cast just like our stockers. The only way I would buy expensive branded wheels is if I wanted fully forged wheels which are light weight, warranteed finish, and custom offsets. Otherwise, quality reps are just as good for the purpose of a link between the tires and the suspension.

When it cums to wheels im too insecure to tell other automotive enthusiast that they are fakes. Ill lose all street cred, nothing worse than seeing their faces react when the convo goes: Hey nice wheels what size and brand? should i lie and save face? what a pickle??? Authentic imitations spoilers and body parts i can care less about.

There are two different things in discussion.

There's a difference between replica wheel manufacturers and OEM wheel manufacturers. Replicas need to meet federal requirements. OEM has to also fulfils BMW's internal requirements (finishes, measurements, balancing, uniformity, etc...). OEM wheel manufacturers also sell aftermarket wheels.

In general, if you can afford it, OEM cast wheels (like 99% of BMW's wheels) are the way to go. They are held to a higher standard than replica/aftermarket only wheels.

The other discussion is cast vs. forged. Note that although the forged process itself is more robust than a cast tire, an aftermarket wheel is still held only to the federal regulations, cast or forged. If you are to buy forged thus paying the $$$, make sure it's a brand that either provides OEM wheels or has a high racing pedigree/reputation, like BBS.

If you're ok with rocking fake wheels, then go ahead. I'm ashamed to even admit that I use M6 replicas for winter beaters, but I barely drive in winter so my CCWs make up for it the rest of the year.

I have 19" REAL OEM rims.

For winter, I purchased 17" Replicas that like exactly like my 19" reals.

Makes sense for me, I'm not going to splash 4000K on rims when Canadian Winters beat the crap out of rims.

So far, the few of us have been very happy with the package we received, winter tires installed and shipped and all.

You do get what you paid for, so if my winter rims start to flake in 2-3 years no biggie, the winter is going to eat them up, Doesn't feel so bad 1500k vs 4000k.

To each their own.

Inexpensive replica wheels make sense for people who like to rock different look of wheel and change them often and not have to invest tons of money up front.

I tend to have 2-3 set of rim for my car at a time and don't expect them to last more than a couple of tire changes. I also like to change my wheels style often. So, inexpensive replica works for me. As long as I don't expect my rims to last the life of my car.

Paying $4k for OEM wheels is just silly. Paying $2k for fake wheels is also dumb.
