Needles are red only when light is on and white during day time. See pic

Nice display - very different, but red/dark orange is actually better for night vision - same reason that a lot of aircraft instruments are illuminated in red.

thanks...and you are right. the closer to the red spectrum the better its for our eyes to readjust to the road. that is the reason military use red len to read map at night( red light safe map). It is also the reason why BMW reluctance to cdhange to different color gauges until now but esthetic does matter and hence the change at BMW. I did it just purely for esthetic reasons.

And you did a nice job, too. I do remember having one of the last generation "new Beetles" that had similar red/white/blue coloring in the instrument panel. It definitely pops, but I had to darken it at night. I remember when I was in the Army how we all had red lenses for our flashlights - it gets DARK in the jungle at night!

I remember the bug have purple color cluster but after driving for 5-6 years I think it turned to more of a blueish color. I dont know about the jungle but Benning was quite dark and the red lenses really help my eyes to re-adjust.

In the jungle, nobody can see you scream...especially at night.

can you post a thread on how you opened the front of the radio? I spilled a juice in there and I was trying to open it to clean it out but I didn't want to break anything!!
