I recommend away from the bike. Assuming you're somehow completely blind to the addictive nature of their ridiculous accelerations, if you're commuting more than an hour every single day in the tri state rush hours where a) nobody really knows how to drive, b) everyone is insecure, mass-murdering racecar driver, you'd be pushing your chances... one of those days you could fly off the road due to some dumbass being a dumbass when you did absolutely nothing but simply be cruising on your way peacefully. At least with shitty cars you’ll get some sort of daily protection…

I use to commute to philly via train... You can sleep, read a book, watch netflix... Being tied to a schedule is definitely inconvenient + there are occasional delays. I like driving, but you will likely be in traffic before and after work, so train is probably better choice or you can always move... I did...

yeah but that bike will have nothing to do with commuting.

well, unless you are talking to your life insurance salesman, wife, or while filling out your organ donor card.

no but seriously, wives are really understanding towards motorcycles.
Yeah, the bike may just be used to ride to the train station lol

Where are you commuting in from? I decided to drive into Philly for work after trying the train for a whole 2 days. I just leave earlier than I otherwise would and drive in..takes me ~1-1.25 hrs to do the 40 mi. trip. I couldn't deal w/the train b/c just getting to the station would take me 45-50 mins, then another 45 mins on the train..it was irritating. I like my personal space and just deal w/the traffic. In terms of cost, it didn't make sense for me to buy a commuter car:

Train = $68 gas (to drive to station) + $155 pass + $40/mo parking @ station = $263/mo
Driving = $273 gas + $120/mo parking = $393/mo
Diff ~$130/mo...couldn't find a feasible way to end up saving $ by buying a commuter once you factor in the incremental insurance costs and mthly pmt. Then again, I don't mind adding miles to the car..I avg 2k mi./mo. any way. Obviously, pub trans is always going to be cheaper, if you can deal w/the schedules and other stuff.

Damn bro, now thats the kind of analysis I have to do. The biggest thing for me is that my car is leased and I only have 36k max limit. I would add 2K a month as well which will blow that limit in a year. Buying out the car at that point would make most sense and i was planning on it anyway.

I have to get into Center city which parking is around $20 a day. So if I take 20*4 = $80 a week *4 = $320 a month.

Gas I would say i get 22mpg and i can go 350mi before i fill up. its about 100mi a day so 400mi a week, means I'd have to fill up 4 times a month. A tank is about $60 * 4 = $240 a month.

$320 + $240 = ~ $560 a month if I decide to drive in from Oxford, PA.

I go back and forth to PHL airport every week and used to drive. ~25 miles, took almost an hour minimum, plus parking and taking the risks with my car.

Switched to taking the Septa train - takes 1.5 hours but is only $9.50, no risk to my car, and I have plenty of books. Biggest thing for me was that it's a set amount of time until I get there - no variable "depending on traffic", etc. The only tradeoff is convenience.

at least i can park the car myself at $20 a day, so its a little less risk than them squeezing in a parking spot themselves. ugh its just such a bitch!

I can hop on a train about 2o min. from my house and its also a 1.5hr ride with switching trains etc. from Parksburg PA

Yeh, if it's a lease then it makes it more difficult to figure out..especially if you're saying it would be 1hr 50min commute?! That's pretty extreme for pub. trans. on a daily basis, it gets tiring.

Try to find out if your company has any sort of subsidized mthly parking if you decide to drive in. If they don't, and if you work normal hrs, if you do in by 10am and out by 6pm, a cpl garages have $10-12 parking in CC. Check out http://philadelphia.bestparking.com/index.php for rates.

Depends on your priority...saving $ (Septa) or save a little time, but pay for it by driving in + pushes you into buying out the car. I still don't think buying a commuter car makes sense once you factor in all the costs. I wouldn't take a bike out on any of the hwys going in/out of Philly (inattentive/crazy drivers).

when you do numbers like that, i cheap commuter car makes more sense. youd do better than 22mpg, not have to fill up with 93, and wont care if some one taps it, etc.

also you can move your bmw then over on your insurance to an "occasional vehicle".
