Your dealer is a moron. A common way for the electric water pumps to fail is internally, they will leak into the circuits and short them...that's most likely where your coolant is going.
That's why it seems fine when they do a diag. There should be shadow faults stored indicating any issue with the water pump, common one being reduced flow rate. I don't understand why everyone insists on continuing to drive after they get a coolant system warning. If the car didn't limit you, you would be replacing your engine right now. Yes it's a pain to sit on the side of the road waiting for roadside assistance, but that's better than dishing out thousands for an overheated engine on what I'm assuming is an out of warranty N52B30. Btw price for parts alone are around $800 for the pump and tstat. It's normal for dealers to charge upto $1000 for labor making this job aroun $2k. Look for an Indy to do the work, will most likely be 2/3 the price. Last edited by Alpineweiss e90; 05-02-2012 at 11:49 AM.. |

Man thats a good question. I would find out first, before going on that trip. I would check car records or take it to a dealer and ask one of thte techs to take a look at your car maybe they know how to find out since they do it on a daily basis??

Just happened to me today. Last week I got the warning for low coolant. Thought it was nothing and filled it up. Yesterday empty again. Just brought it into BMW and it's the water pump. It's running me $1184.11 CAD ;( oh well at least the new parts are under warranty for a couple years.

Is this deal by Tischer for the latest pump and Tstat? Seems like a good price. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...catalogid=4462

Sorry for the bad news but i think you might need to sell it, my water pump failed and spent about 1300 from a reputable local shop that did it. Thank god it was under warranty when it failed, i only paid 100 dollars for the deductible. The parts alone cost the shop 600, which is crazy for a water pump and thermostat

Your dealer is wrong. Please find an indy or diy with a friend's help. Water pumps for our cars are getting cheaper as demand increases... thebmwpartstore.com has the water pump for $342.96, thermostat for $77.15 and $8.50 shipping for a grand total of $428.61 ($46 cheaper than the previously posted deal). Water pumps are just about the only thing that will strand you with our cars. Once yours is replaced you should be good to go for many more trouble free miles. |

if you wanna sell it now - then good used parts are best bet - find a crashed car etc. gonna take some time but might save 50%.
and guys, if you have issues on break downs - post your milage so we get some record going for when parts fail on these cars and it's clear if it's a car worth keeping long.

My water pump failed today, and it was at 66K miles. V.S. Motorsport quoted me $1250 to replace the water pump and thermostat, and also flush the coolant. The price includes the part. Is this a fair price? There was another shop named VFC Engineering in Chicago quoting me $1650 including the parts, and the shop was insane. Their price is even more expensive than BMW dealership. (I checked) First, they were dishonest when they gave out estimate about the cost of the parts, and they also over-charge customer with their labor fees. Moreover, their attitudes were really bad and didn't seem to value their customers. I paid $107 for diagnostic fee after my water pump failed and brought my car to this nearby european auto repair shop (VFC). I was very regretted of my decision and I was not even bothered to talk to the staffs at VFC after they try to overcharge me in every way they could. Then I just had my car towed to V.S. Motorsports. Bad Day!!

I replaced my water pump and thermostat this past weekend, total cost was just under $450 for parts at www.thebmwpartstore.com plus about 6 hours of my time (took my time, ate lunch, put the chain back on my son's bike, etc). I only had a jack and jack stands; I agree that a lift would make it much easier but it can be done without one. My only suggestion would be to remove the sway bar completely (it's only 2 extra screws), don't just let it hang from the end links because I knocked the shit out of my head on it . I did not take out the radiator fan either. All in all this is a very doable diy project that will save you a lot of money.
To quote the great BMW diy'er smolck (and an old movie from the 90's), "what one man can do, another can do!" Save yourselves some money and tackle this project guys! |

It doesn't include thermostat. Just labor, water pump parts, and coolant. I assume it will go above $1000 mark as everyone said if thermostat was included.
