Does BMW really know if you install a tune or is it an empty threat?

I was told today from a friend who works at BMW that the black box can only record up to 100 kms or 60 miles, so just drive it around a bit before you go in if your that worried... and if its a snapped half shaft GL lol

The only "black box" is that they could see the last 12 dme codes wether they were cleared or not its a FIFO system first in first out. Most tunes now days do NOT throw tuner codes so it really isnt an issue. |

If you're so worried about warranty issues, why do you even bother tuning your car. If you don't want to roll the dice, get out of the game. If you want to know something, go talk to your SA. I tell my SA everything about my mods and tune. All the techs want to ride in my car and can't believe how quick it is. The only thing my SA said to me is if something does go wrong, they might tell me to take the car home and return it to stock before bringing it back for warranty service. My SA is really cool and drives a new 335is. Unfortunately he won't race me.

wedge, no need to be so aggressive/condescending.. my SA told me something and I wanted to see if it's true or not. I never said anything about being worried or afraid.
thanks for the replies everyone |

Now that we've heard warranty repairs covered with those that have had tunes, can we hear some cases where warranty horror claims were denied because of tuner codes when the piggybacks of flashes were removed and any codes erased?

This is true, I once got a print out on how many times I've hit the heated seats button one time on my E46 M3, scary what they are able to find out.

BMW is not inherently an unfair business. If they think the damage was caused by a faulty part, they will replace it. Additionally, I have seen them replace turbos on cars they know are tuned... so in that sense, BMW is VERY generous, as it's not required of them to fix anything that you tamper with. The problem we have been seeing in the past is that BMW will avoid repairing something that is common (wastegate rattling or HPFP failure) just because you have a tune. This is more because they aren't sure if it's their fault or the tune's fault. My point is that you, as a moral, upstanding citizen / BMW owner, should determine what is morally right, and what is morally wrong. That being said, I have avoided stingy/unreasonable BMW dealerships by avoiding the smaller ones... the large BMW dealerships (in my experience Southwest BMW of Houston and Prestige BMW in NJ) don't sweat the little things, have more pull with BMW NA to get work done, and are more willing to compromise with their customers.

All these stories of people bringing their car in with tunes and no issues with warranty repairs. I wonder how many stories there are of people getting denied of warranty work because they found out. Im guessing it isn't anywhere as high as the people getting away with it.
