I think he was implying the wheel was set to vertical. Your car has natural negative camber. So putting it at 0 would possible cause this.

Spoke with my tech at BMW today. He said that a "proper' wheel alignment might make the rubbing worse.

Pretty much... he said that the 335i, and specifically the cabriolet, usually requires the camber to be reset closer to 0. This will push out the upper portion of the tire closer to the fender.

Could also be excessive toe in, causing the rear of the tire to rub that ever so annoying area right where the fender meets the rear bumper.

But it's likely just camber or square shouldered tires causing the issues.

My car's running a more aggressive setup and is a lot lower, but with no rubbing because my tires don't run too wide.

we had a similar isue with a 335i but we fix it very easily, we shaved the wheels 3-4mm front and rears, making the off set 35et fronts and 40et rears.
keep in mind that the 4dr 3 has more room in the back so you can get away with a phatter set up.

My fronts are 8.5" et 20 with a 225/35/19 and the car is lowered to what would be considered 0 finger gap or slightly lower.

My rears are a 265. My rears are also 9.5" though and a slightly more aggressive offset than yours so it's effectively a very similar setup. Rear is also lowered and has no gap between tire and fender, the fender is actually tucking a tiny bit of the tire. The thing is there is a lot of variability in the width of different 265's/275's. One of my older 245's is pretty much the same width as my current 265.

I knew it would be that area haha, that area is problematic for a lot of people mainly because of how it's setup and the natural toe in alignment settings our car's come with.

Is your tire's sidewall very square or does have it have a slight stretch edge allowing for a bit more clearance? My current 265's have a more narrow tread width which gives it a slight curve so it's not totally square and this allows JUST enough clearance.

My tire looks more square and meaty instead of stretched. It sounds like going to 265 might not fix the problem depending on the tire, what tires do you run?

On an annoying side note, It looks like where it's been rubbing is now down to the bare metal, I'm going to have to touch that up before it rusts.

Here is another stupid newbie question....... tireshop wants to camber my tires to eliminate the rubbing. Is there a downside to cambering my tires?

This is not 100% true. If EVERYTHING is out of whack (toe, caster, camber) then it will def wear uneven. I have -3 on mine now and it has wore pretty evenly. I was told by mulitple alignment shops and my personal tech at BMW that it would be good if I had

ahh... gotchya ACEE !

Got a good look on what damage the 275s caused. The paint was rubbed right down to the metal in the area where the fender meets the bumper (thanks Dr. G). The drivers side was about two inches long and the passenger side was about four. Had to jack it up and touch it up with paint to hopefully prevent rusting. Other than that it runs a lot quieter than my 18s with run flats.
