I went for the SE E92 as it was the only spec available at the time... and I needed to get a new car. Given a choice I would definitely go for the M sport, but actually prefer my style of wheels or the 19".

My main gripe about the SE is the steering wheel, which I personally find too big and rather uncomfortable and the front spoiler, which isn't aggressive enough for my tastes. Can justify changing the wheel, but not sure about the spoiler, as the car is on a PCP and will get handed back for another car at some point. I'll probably find I can't mod it at all, to be honest.

Having said that, both the SE E92 and the M Sport are striking looking cars with real presence on the road.

One word - cost!

I originally intended to get a 318d ES as this was all I could afford. Following advice from owners on BMWland I was convinced to get a nearly-new 320d SE instead (good call).

M-Sport was just a step too far at the time.

+1

Saving about £2500 is good enough reason!! I have everything (M Sport suspension, M-Seats, M-Steering Wheel) apart from a few M Badges and a bodykit.

(BTW The M-Sport bodykit does look nice)

Agree that M Sport cost about £2500. However, leather costs £300 more on the SE, 19" wheels £400 more, wood trim £250 more, that accounts for about £1000 of the £2.5K.

The M3 wheel is very nice. It is as thick as the M-Sport version, quite soft and has the M stitching so looks good too. Add the appropriate M short-shifter gear knob and some decent pedals and the interior is complete imho.

They are available on eBay.

Someone who knows what they are doing needs to install though as you ideally want to use the existing airbag etc. so careful fitting is required. I'm just not up to it hence mine still sitting in a box in my boot.

Well I had an E46 MSport and got so fed up with feeling every single ridge and lollipop stick on the road, that when I tried the E90 MSport I just knew I couldn't stand another 3 years of constant jostling behind the wheel.

I much prefer the look of the MSport, but to my mind the suspension should be optional. With British roads being so bad, it doesn't always help to have such hard suspension. A little more give can actually help the handling. The hartge suspension and Alpina are in general better than MSport for this very reason I think. But its just my opinion.

And if you put proper tyres on instead of the run flats, then you suddenly realise what a brilliant job BMW did do with the suspension. Ride and handling become amazing

how can you see the wheels if the car is coming towards you?

This is all about my car is better than yours. Yes I would love a 335d / 335i or even an M3, but that is some way away at this time.

But to sit in your Dad's car and say of others cars, it could be "a 320d", so what? A 320d is still a great car and anyone should be proud of owning and driving one. It's not the case that unless you have a 335 coupe you should not buy one.

I wanted the M Sport but with the 230's. Dealer said it couldn't be done. Tried to spec the SE up to match the M Sport (save the body kit) and the price was about the same but the cost to lease was way higher due to the worse residual.

I do like the 230s though ......

M Sport wasn't available when I ordered. I chose aluminium trim and anthacite headlining which I had previously on my M Sport 5 series, and together with the 230 alloys it looks OK. I do however prefer the look of the M Sport front.

I only went for the M Sport (or si tweak in my case) version as I wanted the sports seats and didn't like the SE seats.

I know the SE could be added with sports seats but If I went for the SE it would have cost me more to add the sports seats/suspension/alloys.

Which would have meant the SE would have had higher monthly payments on my lease scheme than the M Sport.

I agree with you Evil! The M Sport will be the better car for residuals, which is important to a private buyer like myself!

I got the m sport as it looks better (imho) and will have better residuals, esp on the 335*s, as most sold will now be m sports.

If the SE looks so great, why do you want the aero lip?

I can only afford the 2.0i too. Went for M Sport because it looks less plain - imho. Just seen a grey 3.0 SE and it looked a bit dull to me. Guess i feel the same about non S-Line Audi's too.

Can't understand why you care what engine the guy in the car next to you has??

I know what you mean, "sports" suspension is all very well, but can become very tiring if the car's your daily driver, especially on longer cross-country runs. Next time around, I'm not sure whether I'd go for M-Sport (with a view to changing the suspension if I couldn't stand it) or SE plus selected M-Sport options. As you say, the M-Sport package with an option to delete the M-Sport suspension would probably suit a lot of people very well.

I'm seriously thinking of doing this - which tyres do you recommend?
