Okay, I ordered the bracket, triangle, and first aid kit from Crown Auto. The first aid kit and brackets came in, but the guy at Crown said that BMW "blocked the triangle to the US"
Why would they block it? FYI, I ordered one from ebay from Paul Miller BMW like the one here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-W...spagenameZWD1V It is NOT the OEM triangle in the blue case. The one I got was GIGANTIC :-( So...any ideas where I can get one?? |

Wasn't somebody looking to get a little help from one of our euro forum members? I might be thinking about something else, but maybe this would be an option.

JD at Crown told me that both the first aid kit and triangle were blocked. He didn't know why the first aid kit was blocked (I told him the theory was the FDA doesn't allow mercurichrome in the US, as it contains mercury, a poison), but he thought the triangle is not DOT approved. My only solution is to get it in Europe when I go next. I volunteer to buy at least one extra set (first aid and triangle), and offer it at cost to whomever in this thread is interested. That's the best solution I've come up with.
I have a contact in the parts department of Park Lane BMW in the Mayfair section of London. I could get it there (the first aid kit is about $30 US) or I might get to Munich, where I could get the stuff also. No guarantees as to when, but perhaps in a month or so.

Check e-bay for the triangles, I've seen them on there occasionally.

Let me know how you get the the one closer to the back in! For me on the coupe, there was a grommet where the pin would go. I haven't figured out ho to get the grommet out yet!

That's not a "grommet" it's a trim fastener, which is basically a press-in expansion rivet. Pop out the center part, then pull out the remainder. You could use a flat-blade screwdriver, but I got mine out with my fingers.

Are you sure you're pulling on the center button and not the outer ring? Mine came right out, no tools required. I don't exactly have fingernails of steel

I wasn't pulling the center out. Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try.

I got off the fastener, but I couldn't pull out the middle. I had to shear it off with a wood chisel! Anyway, the brackets are in, and awaiting the triangle. The rear bracket isn't in very tight though. I have to await a trip to europe to complete the install...

The brackets do seem pretty loose by themselves, but the whole assembly stays put once the triangle's mounted. The rear bracket has a curved plastic tab that pushes against the triangle case and keeps everything in place. My brackets need very little convincing to come off after taking the triangle out, but when it's installed they're solid. |

Its good to hear that the brackets are snug when the triangle is in, as they are pretty loose sitting there alone!

Because I bought one and it didn't fit. Had to pay freakin 25 pounds to ship the correct one from England.
I put the one that didn't fit on eBay, but it's only at $5.00 right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-O...spagenameZWDVW |

I actually saw that, but it said e36, so I passed it by. Are you sure it fits an e39? There's no special bracket for my 2003, there is just a slot in the trunk tool kit.

I'm not certain but aren't the e36/e39 in the same series, like e90/e92? If so, I think it should be the same. |
