I wouldn't worry about VAS. The AE SBP15's vas is over 300L and its been reported in multiple posts on respected sites to be one of the best (if not the best) IB subs you can buy.

I just have 2 issues to ask you about the 15. Firstly most of the extra cone area with the 15 will be covered by the seats frame (just like ~15% of the 12 but more). Secondly I want to HP the Jehnerts at 80hz, so i may need a XO gap if I go with the 15 (maybe LP at 60hz or 70hz). After considering both of these issues would you still say the 15 is a better choice? I've also realised its SPL is around 3dB louder, not sure if we can interpret this the same way as smaller speakers? |

Kaigoss, have you screwed the plate to the rear of the seat as well? (those screws which are on big mdf / wood) Any rattling from the clips / hooks which you used at the top of MDF board? I am sure you are enjoying clean bass and due to increased SPL, you will have more rattles inside the cabin. One thing which I have found interesting... Roll down you windows and bass is even better. With closed windows subs is firing into a cabin where it has to work its way due to air tight cabin. Check is you can feel the difference. Subs with higher xmax have significant effect. And looking at your 12 inch sub, it sits perfectly there. Neraly >95% of sub surface is exposed to sky hole. If you go for 15 inch sub, expect 10-20% of the sub hidden behind the rear seat and subsequent effect on the sound. Well done Kaigoss. I am chuffed

You guys from the UK, isn't is way past your bedtime?
Mo: Don't worry about bass being blocked or cut off, it doesn't work that way. The opening is large enough for the purpose. Also, you can run most IB subs fairly high, some even up to 120Hz, so don't worry about that. Is that what you meant, LOL? Makkan: The larger screws from the top plate don't go through. Only the brass colored cabinet screws go into the back seat. I may replace them with larger ones, as a few of them tore out the plastic. I ended up putting in about 16 of them, it's pretty solid. The brackets don't rattle, they are TIGHT!

I've also built one for a friends 10 camaro ss and made a huge improvement over his square box lying in the center of an already miniscule trunk! That car SUCKS to work in though!!! No room at all for 6'2" 215lbs.

Yeah that is what I meant, thanks! I just though a 12 would blend in easier with the 8 than a 15. Ok will have a think about it and see if there were any 2 ohm 15s in the delivery. |

No rattles outside the trunk. Some rattles inside the cabin I still have to fix.

I would love to try that but with fold down seats, it would make it pretty much useless. BTW, I have fold down seats and no ski hole. E90s are standard with fold down seats but the ski hole is an option that comes with the cold weather package.
Good job on the DIY ski hole.

DIY looks good. You make a good suggestion that we don't really have to cover it up when selling, you can just make a carpeted cover and then its like a ski hole. |

So I got the car back on Friday! Been a nightmare weekend with getting a puncture 70 miles from home on the weekend.
Firstly i want to thank MrSingh for doing a really good install. I will upload some pictures when i get time. My first impression was that the sub plays amazingly low and clean. The bass just sounds like its filling the whole car, like you're bathing in bass. My previous subs (very long time ago) were a totally different experience. My initial worries of it not having enough SPL are now gone. The Fi is currently crossed over at 60ish Hz 12db Butterworth and 20Hz 6db Butterworth. There is more than enough output for me as at the moment i have the sub output level turned down to -7db on the DSP, and on some tracks it sounds perfect, some way too much. This might be because the DLS gains are set to optimum (870w @ 2 ohm). This may be an excuse to go fully active up front in the future to get more headroom. I also really need to get the sub control sorted out. At the moment I either have to use the OEM base level or get my laptop out. My plan is to spend the next week or so listening to how different tracks sound. The EQ is completely flat and currently no TA, i'll try and do TA some time. I'm going to keep the crossovers that were set up by Am but these may change. My ears have been listening to stock rears only for the past 2 months so I want to get used to the sound before changing anything. Then i'll try the suggestion by greef on another thread and experiment with more. I think the mid to high frequencies definately needs to be EQd. It doesn't sound bad but its using the factory EQ. So at the moment it doesn't sound as good as what the MS-8 was able to do. This will be a big challenge for me but hopefully will get there one day! Things i need to do now are deaden the rear as I can hear slight rattle on some tracks. Its very quiet but annoying. I also need to get a bigger fuse at the battery as it blew once (currently 60A) and give some ventilation to the DLS, which would only invole cutting a hole in the rack for its internal fan. At the moment its screwed down on a piece of wood with no air around it. After 1.5-2 hours of continous play it gets way too hot to touch and it went into protection mode once. So there are a few bits and pieces that still need to be done but all in all an excellen result |

Congrats on getting the sub installed. I'm sure it sounds terrific. A few words of wisdom (well not really ), be really careful with all that power you have since it seems to exceed the subs Pe rating. The IB sound is addictive and you will tend to crank it more than you would with any other type setup. I would use the JL method of setting gains just for the sub amp to make sure you are not overpowering it. Also, the 20hz subsonic is way too low, you want to raise this to 25 or better 30 hz with a 24 db slope. There is very little music anyway that happens below 30 hz. I will have my SPB-15 hooked up next week when I get back from vacation.

Yes I might as well turn the gains down as the level on the DSP is at -7dB anyway. I'll mess around with the subsonic but I like it when you can really feel it in your body! |

What about something like this: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=262-882 I was thinking something like an in-wall rectangular speaker. You could cut it and maybe attach it to the plastic cover piece you removed. Not sure how you attach the plastic cover piece, but I am sure there is a way. Can't wait to see what you do next!
