For the sake of clarity, in this country you need to have minimum 3rd party insurance by law, whether you're Peter Pov or Johnny Richpants.

I did say I wasn't sure if it applied to the UK. It's fine in the US and in many other countries I imagine, is it so facetious to suggest we may have a similar method of self insurance?

What's so absurd about not needing to have insurance? Afterall you are just buying into a moneypot that claimants can use to cover damages which will have a maximum liability in the same way your bank account has a limit. Wheres the difference in using your own wealth to settle claims?

If you have to have a court order to prove you have sufficient means set aside to settle any claim then I think you are good to go.

I know in the US you can do it, not sure about the UK but I would be surprised if you couldn't.
Errr, nope.

And in court, no insurance = licence endorsed, 6-8 points and may be disqualified (up to 12 months). Plus a fine - minimum of £165 (if on JSA) to £5,000 - means tested on weekly income. Plus costs, plus victim surcharge (increasing for offences committed from 1 Oct). Although 30% off if pleaded guilty at first available opportunity.

My statement clarified I was talking about UK.
What has what is allowable in certain US states got to do with this thread?

The burden of responsibility is on the visitor to ensure they know the rules, be that us visiting a foreign country or foreigners visiting here.
Suggesting the host country is in someway responsible because their rules are different is a ridiculous standpoint and endemic of the "blame someone else" culture instead of taking responsibility for ones own actions or inactions.
Car Abuser mentioned self-insurance in the US. This is a thread tangent, but thread tangents make threads more interesting. I responded to that in that you can self-insure in the US (ie not have insurance but have the financial resources to pay claims.

Here's the US regulator talking about self-insurance for haulage companies:
http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regul...px?reg=387.309

"The FMCSA will consider and will approve, subject to appropriate and reasonable conditions, the application of a motor carrier to qualify as a self-insurer, if the carrier furnishes a true and accurate statement of its financial condition and other evidence that establishes to the satisfaction of the FMCSA the ability of the motor carrier to satisfy its obligation for bodily injury liability, property damage liability, or cargo liability. "

The give-way-to-the-right-sometimes rule in France I brought up because it is frequently violated by Brits when they drive in France, so before anyone gets-holier-than-thou they should consider that thousands of their countrymen drive in France each year without knowing a basic French traffic law. I'm sure most of them also don't bother to modify their headlights for driving on the right hand side either. A bit like foreigners who come to the UK and make a mistake and drive uninsured without realising it.

It is foreign vehicle.

However, I think the 28 year old will be facing some time in prison, and I agree. Here's why...

Sec. 31(A) Offences against the eyes act 1988
"A person shall be guilty of an offence, if they modify an Italian supercar in any way that is offensive to a person of reasonable firmness. This includes shite colour schemes".

Here endeth the lesson.

Ignorance is not a defence, hence the Ferrari sitting on Scotland Yards forecourt.

The only thing now missing is the price

Wrong!

There was an M3 parked next to it, but it was nicked the night before the photo was taken.
