Apparently it's due to low brake pads but some of us have relatively good pad thickness. For me my pads were low but after a year or so as my pads are not due yet the clunks just went away.

So I can't really pinpoint what the problems be?

Well. That's a little more reassuring than what I thought. I assumed it was something internal in the transmission. Or at the very least a TCU problem.

Possible movement within the pads which also means that they might need changing soon. I had mine changed recently and the clicking noises seems to had disappeared.

I tightened all the bolts on the steering rack. One bolt was actually loose. That cured my problem for sure.

As for the pads. I get that noise as well.

My pad is getting a bit close to replacing. I will report back in coming month after I replace brakes.

Mine was making a clicking sound that could be felt through the steering wheel as well.

On of the bolts On my steering rack was a bit loose. Tightening that fixed my problem.

I have this issue now too… Im thinking the steering column now but at pone point i thought it was the gear box bearings… Im actually under the car now trying to figure out if its the rack or the Column.

Some of you tightened the rack bolts? which ones, any pictures?

My clicks are in both directions and parking lot speeds. I can even make the sounds with the engine off just by putting mild pressure on the wheel in any direction.

looking for a quick solution.

Just check all the lots on the steering rack. Seemed to fix mine

I have exactly the same problem described. I have 1,800km on clock and most noticeable when reversing.

I'm going to raise this with the Dealer when they are fixing my window tinting.

pads and rotors were replaced ALL around...

that was good for a week or so, then the clunk came back.

It's cold here...really cold, but if it happens at hot as well, that's a moot point.

It happens parked and turning the wheel just past the couple inches of play in any direction, left or right, it happens when coming out of park and hitting the brakes for the first time. I think that however is the abs check and the pads resetting themselves...

regardless my buddy has been lookin at this a couple times now and has tightened bolts across the entire thing...one was loose however it still clunks....

I'm thinkin its this knuckle thing...I'm gonna mention that and I've not done DP as of yet.

tighten up your steeering rack. 2 bolts. happend to me,got the car up on a hoist and tighten it. never happened again

Step 1 - locate steering rack.
Step 2 - Identify bolts. There are two (2).

I got this after I installed coilovers. might check this on a hoist tomorrow.

Simple fix captain. all you need to do is raise the car and tighten the two steering rack bolts. this happened to me after i installed my DPs because i had to drop the rack. Mine started clunking again, prolly should use some lock tight.

I was under the car yesterday, so i thought i'd grab a pic just to make this crystal clear for everyone with this problem.

First, take off your underbelly pan. A whole bunch of 8mm screws.
Then tighten the 2x bolts, circled in red.

Use an E12 inverted torx. You might be able to get a 12 point socket onto it (not a hex) if you don't have an inverted torx set, but be very careful not to round off the torx bolt head. But my recommendation would be only to use the right tools.

If they are really loose, you'll need get a 16mm spanner on the other end. From memory one side is really tight fit for this. But i doubt you'll have to do this as if they were that loose i reckon your steering would be all over the place.

Glad I found this thread, as last night I heard a clunk when doing a turn in a tight road after parking - the clunk could be felt through the steering wheel. I'd just re-installed my wider (summer) wheels at the weekend, and you can really feel the difference in the car. I had assumed that the added width of the tyres was probably something to do with the clunk and had assumed that it might be the steering rack moving, as I had undone it last summer to install my DPs.

After reading this it looks like I'll be tightening those two bolts this weekend, but does anybody know if they need to be done to a certain torque?

BMW dealer after changing the lower steering knuckle and the knock returning told me; the have not /and cannot fix the steering knock on E90
